So it looks like we can go ahead and push that rumor of a singing, dancing Catwoman out of the way. Because there’s a new list of possible Catwomans, and Vanessa Hudgens’ name isn’t on it. According to GeeksWorldwide, Warner Bros. has a shortlist of actresses they’re looking at to play Catwoman in The Batman, aka the Robert Pattinson Batman movie.
There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the cast and characters of The Batman. Back in May it was rumored that Batman’s main enemies would be Catwoman, The Penguin, and possibly The Riddler. We recently learned that there would be a very good chance Jonah Hill would be playing either The Penguin or The Riddler (although we still don’t really know much on that). There’s also the possibility that Jeffrey Wright will be playing Commissioner James Gordon.
GeeksWorldwide believes they’ve got the current list of names being thrown around for Catwoman. One of the other Catwoman rumors was that Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves were looking for an actress of color. A rumor that piggy-backed onto that one was that they were looking for a Zoe Kravitz-type. Well, Zoe’s not on the list. But here’s who we’ve allegedly got. Let’s start with the biggest name on the list, which is Lupita Nyong’o. Lupita is reportedly being considered for the role, and despite being an Oscar-winner, she’s no stranger to superhero movies and big franchise films. She appeared in Marvel’s Black Panther, and she has voiced Maz Kanata in three Star Wars films.
Others that are apparently being considered are Tessa Thompson, who plays the Marvel superhero Valkyrie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who appeared in Black Mirror and Beauty and the Beast, Alexandra Shipp, who played Storm in the most recent X-Men films (and also Lifetime’s Aaliyah), and Logan Browning, from Dear White People.
GeeksWorldwide claims that there are more names on the shortlist, so this might not really be a very short list. Whoever it is would be the second woman of color to play Catwoman on the big screen (Halle Berry was first, even if she’d rather we not remember that). And of course, Catwoman was played by a woman of color on TV back in the 1960s by Eartha Kitt on Batman.
Much like most of the casting news surrounding The Batman, we don’t have any definitive answers about who will play who, besides Robert Pattinson. So it’s anyone’s guess as to who will slip into a black leather catsuit and play Catwoman. And I don’t know if that’s the costume plan, but I don’t want to live in a world where Catwoman’s costume isn’t able to inspire a thousand slutty Halloween costumes, so let’s all please assume it does.
