It Must Be Awards Season Because Joaquin Phoenix Talked About His “Joker” Diet

The opening bell for Awards Season has rung! An actor has discussed their transformation diet, officially kicking off the races for Best Actor or Actress at the Oscars, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Next we’ll probably hear from Renee Zellweger for Judy, but the race begins with Joaquin Phoenix who lost 50 pounds to play the always down to clown Arthur Fleck in Joker. According to Access Hollywood, Joaquin’s sallow complexion and diet comprised entirely of American Spirits and a single apple a day, were augmented to include some steamed vegetables to complete his transformation!

Joaquin looks horrifyingly skinny in the Joker trailers. And his thinness in the film has already got the critics salivating. AH reports:

The Golden Globe-winning actor spoke with Access Hollywood about getting into his emaciated look to portray Arthur Fleck, aka Joker for his titular role in the standalone origin story. It’s been reported that Joaquin only at an apple a day to quickly drop 50 pounds, but he quickly shot down that rumor. “It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and steamed green beans.”

I know it sounds unhealthy, but he was under medical supervision the entire time. In fact, given that his usual diet probably consists of some sort of gluten-free sprouted seed cake enriched with his own beard trimmings, he might actually be healthier than he’s ever been. I kid of course. I’m sure Joaquin is a man of rambunctious and lusty appetites. In fact, his director Todd Phillips tortured him on set by dangling his favorite food in front of him.

His director, Todd Phillips, was less help with the weight loss, however. The “Walk the Line” star revealed that Todd had a food item readily on hand that Joaquin craved.

“Todd did have these fucking pretzels that I love. And he’d just have bags of them in his office! And that was difficult.”

Pretzels!?! That’s what he craved. And not even a gig fat carby Bavarian number slathered in spicy brown mustard. The dry kind that comes in a bag and fills your mouth with sand. Oh, Joaquin. I wonder what he’s been eating to gain the weight back? Probably a raw potato and some of those super fattening Marlboro Reds.
