We all figured that another fast food chain would enter into the Chicken Sandwich Wars of 2019, but what we didn’t know is that they (KFC) would bring out a secret weapon: donuts. I guess if you’re going to show up late to the party you might as well bring the Four Loko of chicken sandwiches. Who needs bread when you can have donuts?! Why don’t we just skip all this formality and start putting fried chicken between two sticks of fried butter?
According to Delish:
To paraphrase the great thinker Joey Tribbiani from Friends donuts? Gooood. Fried chicken? Goood. Donuts and fried chicken? Gooood. Though it may seem like a truly strange pairing, KFC announced Tuesday that it was testing out a donut and fried chicken sandwich in select markets.
The sandwich is absolutely what it looks like; it will feature a piece of fried chicken between two glazed donuts for $5.99. It’s actually just one of two pastry/chicken combinations the chain is testing out. The other is a Fried Chicken & Donut Basket meal, which includes chicken on the bone or chicken tenders paired with one donut for $5.49. You can make it two donuts $7.49 if you’re feeling up to the task. Just want a donut? That will run you $1.
Well, if you’re going to clog your arteries you might as well do it as fast as possible, and though I’ve been a fan of the Chicken Sandwich Wars, things have officially gotten out of hand.
That said, if you decide a donut fried chicken is too fancy or not for you, KFC is also giving you the option of a fried chicken and donut basket. KFC, you dirty dog, this started out as a war of chicken sandwiches and now you just dropped a basket of donuts and fried chicken on everyone?! Way to play dirty and bring a donut to a chicken sandwich fight.
It turns out this is a just test run and it’s going to be up to the good people in Norfolk/Richmond and Pittsburgh to see if this can go national.
If you’re looking to give this one a try, it’s available now if you live in the Norfolk/Richmond, Virginia, and Pittsburgh areas. It’s just a test, but chances are if it’s successful, you could be seeing this one in other places around the country soon. In the meantime, I guess you can MacGyver this one by getting a hot dozen from Krispy Kreme and a bucket of boneless chicken from KFC. You can’t really go wrong with that!
But know, sure, why not? At least we now know the exact day we can all really let ourselves go: KFC Donut Fried Chicken Sandwich Day.
