Even though she only met him a handful of times, Sinead O’Connor and Prince will forever be intertwined thanks to Nothing Compares 2 U, the Prince penned song that made her famous. In 2014, Sinead told Esquire Magazine that one of the few times she met Prince, he tried to whoop her ass. Apparently, he “summoned” her in order to lecture her about her potty mouth, and things escalated after she told him to fuck off. Yesterday, Sinead repeated the story to Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, adding that there were other women too, who had first hand experience with Prince’s petite fists of fury. How fucking dare she*!

On the show, Sinead gave a detailed account of the time she spit at Prince as he chased her around a car on a Malibu highway at 5 AM. Sinead blames the drugs for his behavior. Arsenio Hall has yet to comment. (via The Independent):
“It was a very frightening experience. He summoned me to his house one night and I foolishly went alone. He was uncomfortable with the fact I wasn’t a protégé of his and that I’d just recorded the song.”
She continued: “He was wanting me to be a protégé of his and ordered that I don’t swear in my interviews. I told him where he could go and he went for me. He went upstairs and got a pillow and he had something hard in the pillow. I ran out of his house, hiding behind a tree.
“We met on the highway in Malibu at five in the morning – I’m spitting at him, he’s trying to punch me. I had to go ring someone’s doorbell, which my father always told me to do if I was in a situation like that.”
I’m picturing Sinead’s dad sitting her down at the tender age of 12, advising her on exactly what to do in case a 5’3” musical genius wearing a ruffled shirt and platform boots ever tries to beat her ass with a pillowcase filled with a bunch of old copies of the Watch Tower. Because you can never be too prepared!
Reading this, I was confused about how we got from the house, to a freeway in Malibu. But in her previous account of the incident, Sinead explained that after leaving his house, Prince hopped in his car and chased her down. Sinead added:
O’Connor said the singer, who died in April 2016, was “into some pretty dark drugs at the time” and added: “I’m not the only one he went at.
“One of the girls in his band was in the hospital with broken ribs at the time.”
She also claimed there were other women who were attacked by the singer and said they should come forward to share their stories.
Here’s Sinead on GMB.
She then went on to perform NC2U while wearing a hajib (Sinead is a recent convert to Islam), so no hard feelings I guess?
For many reasons, most of them petty and defensive, I’m glad Prince isn’t around to witness Sinead’s most recent performance. And I kind of wish I didn’t have to either, because her original cover is so sublime.
