Ed Sheeran Broke U2’s Tour Record By Raking In Almost $800 Million

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) Tour started on March 16, 2017 in Italy, and it just wrapped up in Ipswich, England on Monday. Ed was on that tour for more than two years, and played 255 shows. I complain a lot about the amount of times I have been forced to listen to Thinking Out Loud at weddings, doctor’s offices, the grocery store, 1-800 number hold music. But I never once thought of poor Ed Sheeran having to sing it at every show for more than TWO YEARS. You know what? No, I can’t feel too sorry for him. Because he got paid every time he sang it, and all I got was the urge to buy earplugs.Maybe Ed can buy me some, because I know he’s got the money!

Billboard says that Ed’s Divided Tour sold 8.9 million tickets, and grossed $776.2 million. It’s officially the highest-grossing tour of all time, beating U2’s record set in 2011 for the 360° Tour. U2 played 110 shows over the span of 25 months, and brought in $736.4 million. The next highest-grossing tour was The Rolling Stone’s A Bigger Bang Tour that ended in 2007 with $558.3 million. I’m not really that shocked Ed made so much money. After all, there’s a lot of people out there with sleep issues.

9 million people, 893 days, 46 countries, 175 cities, 260 shows, 268 touring crew, 193265 miles travelled, 2 broken arms, 3 marriages, 4 babies. What a wild ride this Divide tour has been. The whole process of writing the album starting in 2015, then recording it in 2016, promoting it, setting out on the road to play it for all of you guys. It’s so weird to put it to bed and move on. Thank you to everyone involved in this whole Divide process, all the people who helped make the album, all the people who helped promote the album, all the fans who listened and came to watch, this wouldn’t be possible without you. Most of all I want to thank my fantastic touring team, who have given up their lives for 2 and a half years to help me achieve my dreams. Thank you for all of your hard work and constant friendship. The Divide tour – 2017 -2019. Officially the biggest tour of all time, so weird to say that, and we survived it !

For perspective, the title of highest-grossing tour by a female artist belongs to Madonna, with her Sticky & Sweet Tour that ended in 2009 with $408 million. I am a little shocked that Ed Sheeran is able to bring in more dollars than Madonna. All Ed does is stand there in his little wool jumper and scruffy ginger beard, singing about wanting to hug on a girl he thinks is pretty. Madonna is out there thrusting her crotch around on stage until you scream, “Enough! I have been thoroughly entertained!

Ed’s last tour, the x (Multiply) Tour, ran for 28 months and 180 shows, and wrapped up in 2015 with $150.7 million. Needless to say, Ed is probably very tired and is ready for a break. The Sun reports that Ed announced he’d be taking about an 18 month break before the next time he goes on tour. He’ll spend that time with his new wife, Cherry Seaborn. I’m glad he’s taking so much time off. Because he’s been on tour for so long, that it’s going to take him a while to stop greeting Cherry every morning by screaming: “Hello my wife! Are you ready to eat some breakfast?? I can’t hear you!
