Brody Jenner And Kaitlynn Carter May Not Be Legally Married But Nevertheless They’re Splitting

People reports that…er, what does he do exactly? Um, oh right, The Hills: New Beginnings star Brody Jenner and his wife of a little more than a year Kaitlynn Carter are dissolving their beautiful union after five years together. They might not have to expend that much effort to do it because a source claims that their wedding certificate was basically a cocktail napkin with “Brody and Kaitlynn are married now, you guys!” and the date scrawled on it in eyeliner.

Here’s the official press release:

“Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter have decided to amicably separate,” the pair’s reps, Scott Newman and Lindsay Maguire, tell PEOPLE.

“They love and respect one another, and know that this is the best decision for their relationship moving forward,” the reps add.

Brody and Kaitlynn, whose stormy marriage is a storyline on The Hills sequel, were “married” on Suma Island off the coast of Indonesia on June 2 of last year. Note the quotation marks.

A source tells PEOPLE Brody, 35, and Carter, 30, were not legally married as they never made their union official.

“Brody and Kaitlynn have had issues for years. It is no secret amongst those who knew them. And the show was not good for them,” the source says of The Hills: New Beginnings.

Deciding to appear on The Hills togther when their marriage was already messy is supposedly one of the reasons for their split. (And not Moppa Jenner taking his girlfriend’s name after transitioning? Don’t look at me like that – it must have been awkward!)

“It got so bad that Kaitlynn had actually moved out before they started filming, but then moved back in. Doing The Hills magnified a lot of things in their marriage. And it became clear that it wasn’t going to work. They both knew it.”

Their conflicting views on having children didn’t help.

“They butted heads over that constantly. Kaitlynn really wants to be a mom and never swayed from that. She thought Brody was change his mind, but he didn’t,” the second source adds.

Another reason might have been that Brody kept insisting on threesomes. Back when he had a sex talk show (ugh), he told GQ that they were all about bringing what I assume was another gal into the bedroom. Sometimes one of the people in that sitch might just be being nice and agreeing to try it for the first time. And then the other person just takes that as a full-on license. And now picture Brody assuming she’s all rock em’ sock em’ about it all the time and Kaitlynn’s finally like, “Look, can we have one night when I don’t have to share a damn pillow with AshleyJennTiffanyMackenzieCrystalLola?”
