Idris Elba Dances In A Teaser For The Trailer For “Cats”

Earlier today, Idris Elba dropped a teaser for Cats on Instagram, and it truly is a Christmas in July situation, because this video has everything. It’s got Idris dancing. It’s got several front and back shots of Idris in grey sweatpants. It’s got Idris winking directly at the camera, for those who get off on eye contact. And if Idris Elba isn’t your thing, there’s also a couple shots of the bonkers-looking set, which will surely please anyone who thinks this movie is bound to be a mess.

The first trailer for Cats doesn’t come out until Friday, but Idris decided to tease us all today. Idris explains in the teaser that he’s always done things that he didn’t think he could do or that he’d like to try, which is why he’s playing Macavity (or Jack Nicholson) in Cats. And he hopes that the film will make people say, “Whoah.” I said that when I watched this teaser, but not for the reasons he was hoping. I said it when I got to those workers spray painting that giant plaster lion head and was like, “Whoah, which Real Housewife of New Jersey had a yard sale?

Universal Pictures also released a longer behind-the-scenes look at the film featuring Idris, as well as Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, (singing voice) Ja-son De-ruuuu-lo, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, and James Corden. They give us a better look at the set:

At one point, Taylor describes the film as being timeless, but also that it was updated in ways that are “so, so great.” Other than the gender-flipping of Old Deuteronomy, Taylor doesn’t explain what other changes have been made to update the film. I’m looking at all that furniture above, and I hope one of the updates was a new song called “I Peed On All Of That.
