At 73 and a showbiz forever person, Liza Minelli has seen and done it all. When you’re the old-school gay icon daughter of history’s very first gay icon (Oscar Wilde doesn’t count because he didn’t do any movies), you’ve been there and back, won the Tony for it, probably snorted coke off that Tony, and kept on jazz hands-ing your way through life with aplomb. So when these up and coming little floozies try to emulate your mom’s classics, you need to show them a seat. To celebrate Pride Month, Liza with a Z briefly opened her parasol over Lady Gaga’s version of her mom Judy Garland’s classic A Star Is Born.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Liza was asked about what her mom would have thought about Gaga’s Oscar-nominated performance in Bradley Cooper’s blockbuster about how showbiz is a bitch that will make you pee your pants on stage at the Grammys.
“She would have laughed,” Minnelli said. “And then she would have gotten into it.”
“I can hear her saying, ‘OK, let’s go!'” she added. “Great to the end!”
HAH. Liza doesn’t give a sequined shit about offending anybody and tells it like it T-I-is! She’s obviously heard “Shallow” playing too many goddamn times over the PA at Macy’s, and is as sick of it as the rest of us.
In other Liza shady lady news, ET also asked her about the upcoming biopic about her mom, Judy, starring Renée Zellweger and Liza managed not to laugh at Renée like her mom probably would have. And yes, Liza still isn’t really into it.
ET’s Nischelle Turner spoke with Minnelli about the project, who claims she hasn’t seen any of the trailers.
“Oh, really? No, no I haven’t [seen anything],” she admitted, before crediting Zellweger as “a wonderful” actress. “I just hope they don’t do what they always do. That’s all I’ve got to say.”
Renne says that she and Liza have a mutual friend in common and she tried to reach out to her about playing her mom, but to no avail.
Liza probably saw the trailer for Judy (bitch can’t sing like Judy!) and was too embarrassed for her to even text back. She couldn’t even find it within herself to send the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
