Alec Baldwin Isn’t Totally Done With Playing Trump

That was quick. Much like Alec Baldwin denying he ever went full-Alec Baldwin over a parking spot, Alec Baldwin is now denying that he’s 100% done with squinting hard in a wig that appears to be made of old attic insulation.

During a USA Today interview last week, Alec said that the 44th season of Saturday Night Live will most likely be his last time playing Donald Trump. He also threw out some names of who Lorne Michaels might want to call up to play Trump when SNL returns in the fall (Alec’s suggestions: SNL announcer Darrell Hammond and The President Show’s Anthony Atamanuik). Yesterday, Alec spoke to Vulture to clear up the story – the one that he himself put out there – and now he’s saying that it’s just too soon to know whether he’s retiring his Trump impersonation.

“To be honest with you, I don’t really know. [Lorne Michaels] is my dear friend and that’s one of the most important relationships I’ve had. Lorne was responsible for coercing me into doing 30 Rock, which was the best job I’ve ever had in my life…[He] is somebody that I trust, and after I have a nice conversation with him, we’ll see what the future holds. We’ll see.”

He went on to explain that when he said he was sick of Trump, what he meant was that he was sick of examining Trump. And he just means that he’d rather divert than energy elsewhere, like to his five (and probably many more) kids.

“My feelings about Trump are on the record. I think you can’t criticize Trump enough. There’s no crossing a line there, to some degree. But the bottom line is, whatever political energy I’ve had, I would typically put that into candidacies or issue initiatives. And sometimes I wonder if I want to put that energy there. Because I don’t have a limitless amount of time. I have four kids and that’s by far the priority in my life.”

While he may be done with playing Trump, it’s pretty obvious he loves the attention he gets from it. And at the end of the day, isn’t that the goal?At the very least, he’ll probably keep playing Trump just to piss off his internet enemies. Like yesterday, when Alec teased his return to SNL after starting a messy Twitter fight with grown-up playground snitch Mike Huckabee.

But what changed? Alec sounded like he really was ready to retire. Then he says he’s got to talk it over with Lorne first. I know the rumor about Lorne Michaels is that he’s a diabolical puppet master, but I didn’t realize he also held so much power over an alpha-asshole like Alec Baldwin. Maybe Lorne Michaels and 30 Rock is the clue here.

Alec, it’s Lorne. Just heard you don’t want to do Trump anymore. See, we need you for ratings. And if you don’t do Trump, bad things might happen. Like, maybe we do a 30 Rock reboot and cast someone else as Jack Donaghy. Billy perhaps? No, Stephen.
