After Showgirls became a critical and commercial hit in 1995, and beat the record of the most Oscar wins ever (including Best Picture, Best Actress for Gina Gershon, Best Actor for Kyle MacLachlan, Best Supporting Actor for James The Cheating Slut Dancer, Best Supporting Actress for Mama, Best Costume Design, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Sound Mixing thanks to the moans in that dolphin seizure fuck scene)*, Gina Gershon had her pick of any role she wanted. Industry sources tell me* that Gina turned down the Frances McDormand role in Fargo and the Juliette Binoche role in The English Patient. So Frances and Juliette have Gina to thank for their Oscars!
But Gina followed-up Showgirls with another perfect masterpiece. Gina took on the role of clit-throbbing butchie lesbian ex-con goddess Corky, opposite Jennifer Tilly’s Violet, in Bound for The Wachowskis. That movie is so perfect and so hot that it temporarily turned me into a lesbian, which explains why my closet has a flannel I bought from 1996 in it. Gina and Jennifer reunited for an interview and photo shoot with Entertainment Not Weekly.
Entertainment Weekly’s article gets into how The Wachowskis didn’t want to make lesbian soft-core porn for straight dudes. They wanted the sex to feel authentic so they hired feminist sex writer Susie Bright to consult. Bound is about an ex-con (Corky) who gets a job as a handywoman at an apartment building and falls in love with a mobster’s girlfriend (Violet), and the two make a plan to rob the creep mobster of $2 million. One Hollywood studio apparently agreed to up the budget if Corky was turned into a dude. Gina also says that her agents told her not to do it and that it’d ruin her career. She dumped her agents and took the second greatest role of her career after Cristal Connors. Gina says that Bound is the movie she’s most proud of, and I’m going to tell myself that after she said that, she followed it up with, “Besides Showgirls, of course!”

Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly aren’t fans of watching themselves on screen — but they’ll make an exception for their 1996 film, #Bound. The masterminds behind #TheMatrix, the Wachowskis, made their directorial debut with this noir, which quickly became a cult classic in the gay community. We got Gershon and Tilly back together to rewatch the film and reminisce. Link in bio. ?: Austin Hargrave for EW
The photo shoot that these ageless goddesses (Gina is 56 and Jennifer is 60) did also includes an homage to the iconic Sophia Loren side-eyeing Jayne Mansfield’s chichis picture.

I wish Jennifer Tilly called Gina “Corky” in that clip, because in Bound, I love it when Violet says “Corky” in that high-pitched breathy fuck me voice of hers. Corky from Life Goes On was probably never the same after hearing Jennifer Tilly say his name like that.
It’s time for a Bound 2 (don’t even mention that other Bound 2), and in the sequel, Corky and Violet use the $2 million to take down creeps of the world. Wait, maybe that’s why Gina signed on to a Woody Allen movie. For research for Bound 2! Just let me believe.
