People is reporting that NeNe Leakes is thinking about delivering the coldest set of divorce papers this side of the Ice Age. The second part of the Real Housewives of Atlanta reunion aired last night and the self-proclaimed most relevant cast member said that she and her husband Greg Leakes have been seeing a counselor and she’s considering divorcing him even during his cancer treatments.
51-year-old NeNe and 63-year-old Greg have been married twice. The first time from 1997 all the way to 2011, and then they got remarried in June 2013. So these two picked each other twice even though they’ve had problems. Well those problems have been tested since Greg was diagnosed with cancer last year. The treatment for Greg’s illness is obviously taking its toll on the both of them, which was demonstrated when NeNe literally called out her husband for being a grouchy cancer patient.
Things don’t seem to be much better. While talking to Andy Cohen about their issues, Greg told him that he hopes to save the marriage but NeNe was not co-signing that sentiment:
“I can’t tell you anything that I’m going to do… I feel like I have been pushed up against a wall and I’m coming out as ‘no.’ … Anything is possible, we just have to see.”
At the reunion, Greg admitted that NeNe wasn’t totally in the wrong for thinking he was an asshole because he sometimes was, but so was NeNe:
“It was difficult at times… I’m not a poster child for kindness… Nobody’s perfect… There was some times [it was NeNe], but most times it was on me.”
But they admitted that even without the cancer, things between them were not always great and in fact if the cancer was gone then probably so too would be NeNe:
“Gregg is not a walk in the park. Not even if he didn’t have cancer, he is not a walk in the park… Our relationship is not great. It really put a strain on us… It would be easy to make a decision about divorcing Gregg if he didn’t have cancer… I don’t want to live my life unhappy.”
Greg also said that divorce is maybe an option:
“The reward might not necessarily be that we are husband and wife at the end… The reward might be that we are best of friends at the end.”
NeNe said that even if she leaves Greg (which she has hinted at several times over by this point) they’re still going to be a family:
“It’s tough. We are family, period. Whether we are together or we are not, we share a 20-year-old son… I’m always going to be here for Gregg.”
Since the reunion was filmed NeNe and Greg obviously haven’t broken up and she also posted to her now-private Instagram account celebrating Greg completing six months of chemotherapy:
“It’s been a long emotional ride for our entire family! Awesome job hunni! I’m so happy for you and the strength you showed during this difficult time in your life.”
I guess NeNe wants to leave things up for interpretation until she signs her contract for the next season of Real Housewives. Gotta give the producers a hint of a dramatic divorce storyline if you want to get another season and a few more dollars every episode. But you also can’t have it just play out during filming hiatus. Can’t just have a dramatic tabloid divorce off-camera for free. It’s called timing.
