Jussie Smollett On Why He Didn’t Give His Phone To The Police, And People Doubting His Attack Story

Yesterday in Night Crumbs, I linked to a preview of Jussie Smollett’s interview with Robin Roberts for Good Morning America where he said he wasn’t only pissed off at his attackers, but he’s also pissed off at those who are attacking him with claims that he either made the whole thing up or made up parts of it. The full interview aired on GMA today, and Jussie responded to those who think his racist and homophobic attack was really a Grindr hook-up gone wrong. He also had an explanation for those who heard about him not handing over his phone to the police immediately and threw him the kind of suspicious look that his TV dad Terrence Howard throws at an ass that doesn’t smell baby wipes-fresh.

On January 29, Jussie had just arrived back in Chicago late at night and went to a Subway near his apartment building to get some food. While coming back from Subway, Jussie claims that two slimy butt burps attacked him, put rope around his neck, yelled slurs at him, and poured bleach on him before running off while screaming, “This is MAGA country!” The FBI was brought in to investigate, along with Chicago PD, because days before, a death threat addressed to Jussie arrived at the studio where his show Empire shoots and the return address simply said: MAGA.

Jussie gave a few more details and cleared some details up to Robin, saying that while walking back to his apartment from Subway, he was talking to his manager Brandon Z. Moore, when he heard someone scream, “Empire!”, at him. Jussie says his masked attackers called him some slurs and said, “This is MAGA country,” before punching him in the face. Jussie punched back and the two went at it, as his second attacker kicked him in the back. Jussie says they stopped suddenly and ran off. Jussie then realized that a rope was around his neck and also realized that his manager was still on the phone and heard it all.

Since January 29, Chicago PD released some grainy pics of “two persons of interest” who were walking near the scene of Jussie’s attack at around the time he was attacked. Chicago PD doesn’t have any footage from Jussie’s attack yet. They do have security footage of him walking into his building with the rope still around his neck. The New York Post also claims to have found some hot sauce with bleach in it near the attack and gave it to the cops. TMZ also reported today that an unnamed actor from Empire was met at Chicago O’Hare airport by the cops and brought in for questioning The unnamed actor was with a man who the cops also brought in. Jussie was also at the police station today for more questioning.

Jussie told Robin that he didn’t get that good of a look at his attackers since they were both wearing ski masks, but he did see the build of his first attacker. Jussie has seen the pic of the “persons of interest” and believes those are his attackers.

TMZ’s police sources claim that the Chicago PD identified the people in that blurry ass pic and interviewed them. The two are not considered suspects as of now.

Jussie waited a minute to call the police and considered not even getting them involved, and he said it’s because society views gays as weak and he’s far from that.

Jussie thinks that he was attacked because he’s got calluses on his hands from dragging Trump (who responded to his attack by saying “it was horrible”) so much, and said that if he let everyone know his attackers were a race other than white, he’d have more supporters in his corner.

He also spit on the narrative that it was a rough trade date that went too far. And as for why he and his manager refused to hand over their phones to police, Jussie said that he wasn’t going to do that because he’s got a lot of private pictures, texts, phone numbers, and e-mails on there and he wasn’t about to let the cops have it for 3 hours. Jussie’s lawyer later handed over phone records, but information was redacted, so the cops rejected them. Jussie’s lawyer said that they will work with the Chicago PD on getting the phone records they need:

I’m with Jussie. I don’t know if I’d hand my phone over to police either. Because an hour later, they’d call me into an interrogation room and wonder why I had so many disturbing pictures of a mutilated naked mole-rat that had been ran over by a dozen semi-trucks. What kind of sick psychopath am I? I’d have to explain to them that those are actually b-hole pictures I send to prospective Grindr tricks. And I’d probably get arrested for my music choices alone. No offense to Atomic Kitten.
