Geoffrey Owens Made An Appearance In The SAG Awards Opener

Bringing 9-5 realness, Geoffrey Owens was featured in the opening “I’m An Actor” bit at last night’s SAG Awards. You may recall that back in September, Geoffrey was photographed working at a New Jersey Trader Joe’s, the unflattering pictures eventually becoming fodder for Daily Mail and Fox News. But nobody was gonna play Geoffrey dirty like that, and instead of making fun of him, people flooded him with support. Nicki Minaj even got involved, inserting herself into the conversation by offering Geoffrey $25,000 he didn’t ask for. When she eventually came through with the funds, Geoffrey donated them to The Actor’s Fund in the name of The Rashad Show (yes, we are still calling it that) alum Earle Hyman.

If you ever wondered if a celeb would choose beef, chicken or salmon at your wedding, then the “I’m an Actor” segment is for you. Sitting in front of a cold plate of food, a few select actors are featured to briefly say something pithy about their noble profession. Last night, Geoffrey got the biggest ovation when he shared his Trader Joe’s story.

Ever humble, Geoffrey later  told People how touched he was by how well he was received. At the after party he said:

“I just can’t believe it,” he said of the warm welcome and lengthy applause he received. “It’s just so bizarre. I just feel like, ‘What am I doing here?’ I just talked to Glenn Close. It was so great because we worked together years ago. Everybody has just been so kind and so nice. I can’t believe it. I’m in awe.”

Geoffrey and his glowing complexion have been working steadily this whole time, including when he was at T.J.’s. But the boost from all the subsequent attention and the “sweet, warm welcome from the industry” has him feeling “rejuvenated”. Sure, he sounds like a swell guy but I’m sure there was a subtle drag aimed at Lady Gaga in there somewhere.
