Time Magazine Passed Up Donald Trump To Honor Murdered And Imprisoned Journalists As The “Person Of The Year”

It seems like only yesterday (it was) when we were wondering if Time was going to take the easy route and award Donald Trump as “Person Of The Year” since that trick lives on every paper, cable news channel, and Tweet. I was also hoping they’d go the Us Weekly route and award it to Duchess Meghan since it would take all of 15 seconds for Duchess Kate to order her minions get her the cover of American Vogue. Time showed it’s the only mature one of us all and awarded it to “The Guardians and the War On Trust.” Essentially, it’s an award to journalists who have devoted everything for the sake of reporting the truth.

Time included the slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi (who was on the shortlist released yesterday), arrested Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, Reuters journalists Wa Loneand Kyaw Soe Oo (they’ve been held in Myanmar for almost a year), and the Capital Gazette —  the Annapolis, Maryland-based newspaper where five staffers were shot and killed at its offices in June. Time Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal put it best:

“They are representative of a broader fight by countless others around the world — as of Dec. 10, at least 52 journalists have been murdered in 2018 — who risk all to tell the story of our time.”

Is someone chopping onions because my eyes suddenly hurt. The lengthy profile on this year’s honorees gives props to this batch of reporters for doing the dirty work, digging in, and rising above the turd soup of lies that can be Twitter. I wonder on Earth who they might be talking about. Oh, the Time reporters went in because #duh:

“That world is led, in some ways, by a U.S. President whose embrace of despots and attacks on the press has set a troubling tone. ‘I think the biggest problem that we face right now is that the beacon of democracy, the one that stood up for both human rights and press freedom—the United States—now is very confused,’ says Ressa, the Rappler editor. ‘What are the values of the United States?’”

Kardashian values, that’s what! The Time team then notes Trump was second runner-up followed by the man investigating him, Robert Mueller. Oy vey, I’d actually give anything for a slow year where Kim Kardashian is the one who gets this  “honor.
