Shane MacGowan Ruined Johnny Depp’s Wedding Singer Dreams

Today’s “Not all heroes wear capes” award goes to Shane MacGowan, messy lead singer of The Pogues, and official nominee for the Keeping it Real Hall of Fame (if he’s not already in there with his own exhibit).

60-year-old Shane got married in an unfancy ceremony in Copenhagen on Monday to his girlfriend of 30 years, 52-year-old Victoria Clarke. Johnny was invited to Shane’s wedding because they’re friends.

What Johnny wasn’t invited to do was a sloppy karaoke performance during the reception, and Shane quickly put Johnny in his place.

The Mirror says that Victoria called into Ireland’s RTÉ Radio One after the wedding with some details about their big day. She says that at one point, Johnny Depp – a man whose overwhelming hubris has convinced himself that he’s a rock star – decided to serenade the new couple with a cover of The Pogues’s A Rainy Night in Soho.

Victoria says that Johnny “tried” to sing Rainy Night and didn’t get very far before Shane said: “Stop, I don’t want to hear it.” Victoria says that Johnny then started singing Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, which was “fantastic.” Victoria proved she’s a master of accidental shade by adding that Shane’s friends the Cronin brothers “played a lot” and that they were “really good.”

That was entirely too brave of Johnny to attempt to sing one of his friend’s songs in front of his friend, at said friend’s wedding, all while looking like a knock-off version of that friend. Dear Johnny: nobody wants to live a Single White Female moment at their own wedding. That’s almost worse than showing up with the cheapest toaster from Bed Bath & Beyond and forgetting to tape the gift receipt to the inside of the box.
