Taylor Swift Reminded Everyone At The AMAs To Get Out And Vote

Recent politics enthusiast Taylor Swift continues to be a modern day Uncle Sam. Or is it Yankee Doodle Dandy? Americans, help me out here – which one is your voting mascot? Regardless, Taylor wasn’t happy with simply encouraging her followers to register to vote. She also wants to see people actually vote on November 6. Her most recent public outreach campaign stop was at the American Music Awards last night.

Taylor broke an all-time AMA record last night after winning four awards (Tour of the Year, Favorite Album Pop/Rock, Favorite Female Artist Pop/Rock, Artist of the Year), and is now the most awarded female artist in AMA history, with 23 awards. The old Taylor really is dead, because the old Taylor definitely would have made all four acceptance speeches about TAYLOR. But as she accepted the award for Artist of the Year, Taylor thanked her fans, then reminded everyone that the AMAs are voted on, just like the upcoming midterm elections, and that everyone needs to get out there and vote.

“Every single time this happens, it means something different to me, it represents something different. And this time I just want you to know it represents encouragement and motivation for me to be better, work harder, and try to make you guys proud as much as I possibly can…This award, and every single award given out tonight, were voted on by the people, and you know what else is voted on by the people? The midterm elections on November 6. Get out and vote. I love you guys.”

Taylor didn’t just use the AMAs to drive up registration numbers and break Vote.org, she also performed too. Taylor opened the AMAs with a performance of “I Did Something Bad.” It’s probably good she didn’t find a way to work voting into that performance. Because the biggest something bad you could do on voting day is a tie between not showing up and voting for your own write-in candidate. And seeing Taylor slip a giant pretend ballot marked “Mickey Mouse/Penis” into a bedazzled box held by her dancers on the AMA stage is a confusing message to send. Instead, she had a huge robotic snake rise up from under the stage. You can see the first part of her performance below, and you can watch the entire thing here (until it most likely gets yanked down).

If Taylor wants even more people out on voting day, she should throw a V8 engine and some seatbelts on that snake and sell rides to local polling stations. Performing your civic duty and riding there on a giant snake? Look, you’ve got to hook first-time voters where you can.

Here’s more of Taylor on the AMAs red carpet looking like a pumpkin spice latte-drinking disco ball.
