The Little Monsters Smear Campaign Isn’t Slowing “Venom” Down

I guess us thirsty hos who still occasionally look at Tom Hardy’s old MySpace photos are keeping the man in biz — Lady Gaga fans be damned! The same Little Monster army that went HAM on Ed Sheeran for implying she had two good albums and thought she was invincible pivoted to Tom, Michelle Williams and their comic book-based Venom, which opens against Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born this weekend. There was a Twitter Little Monster campaign where Gaga fans tweeted about how bad Venom was…and critics agree. Despite the shit reviews and smear campaign, Venom is on track to take the weekend!

Variety says Venom made $10 million last night during previews at about 3,500 theaters and is now the top October preview of all-time. ASIB still made $4.6M from previews over the week, which ain’t bad since comic book movies bring out even your memaw who only turns on the TV for 60 Minutes and ASIB is a little more niche (aka just us kweenz looking for Gaga to pull a Cher and win an Oscar). Venom is expanding to about 4,500 theaters tonight, and most people think it’ll rake in about $55M to $70M for the weekend. ASIB has people expecting anything from $28M to $40M. Venom should become the best October opening of all time, but it also cost $100M to make. ASIB only cost $36M to make, and it’s Bradley’s directorial debut.

Either way, some say the two movies together could lead to this being the best October in box office history, and not all is lost on A Star Is Born. With glowing reviews and great word of mouth, most people figure both Bradley and Gaga are directing their assistants to get rid of those trash Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards and VMAs off the mantle: OSCAH is coming home!
