The First Picture Of Joaquin Phoenix As The Joker Is Here

September 17, 2018 / Posted by:

Yesterday, Todd Phillips, who is directing The Joker origin movie called The Joker, released the very first look at Joaquin Phoenix as the title character. Take everything you knew about The Joker, throw it into a dumpster located directly behind the men’s section of a Michigan Kmart, and you’ve only scratched the surface.

Todd simply titled the shot “Arthur.” Why yes I did immediately start singing: “When you get caught without shampoo in Gotham Ciiiiiiity.” But it might actually be a clue to The Joker’s real identity in this film. For a long time, The Joker never really had a name. In 1989’s Batman, he was Jack Napier before he fell into a vat of chemicals. The internet also likes the name Jack Napier. The Hollywood Reporter seems to think that Todd Phillips is confirming the rumor that The Joker’s real name in this film is Arthur Fleck.

The Joker’s nickname is the Clown Prince of Crime, but Joaquin is giving me more of a “Lazy Lord of Unemployment” vibe. It’s like what you might get if 80’s-era Emo Philips had an older, apathetic brother that refused to move out of their mom’s basement. A man who has been repeatedly asked to leave McDonald’s after making a scene while asking why they won’t sell him the long-discontinued Onion Nuggets. Oooh, maybe that’s his origin story. We do know this Joker movie deals with what led The Joker to a life of crime. I can’t wait for the scene where Joaquin’s Joker threatens to come back and blow up the McDonald’s, just as soon as he can borrow his mom’s Buick Century to do an explosives run.
