Alec Baldwin Won’t Be In Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Movie After All

Alec Baldwin may be rich, a frequent tuxedo wearer, and have a history of facing off with strangers on the streets of New York, but he won’t be playing Batman’s dead dad in an upcoming film about The Joker. A few days ago it was reported that Alec would appear opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillip’s origin story about The Joker, as Bruce Wayne’s father Dr. Thomas Wayne. Sources were extremely sure that Alec had been cast in Joker, and it seemed all that was left was for Alec to confirm the news himself. But he tweeted that it’s not happening.

Oooh, look at Alec – so cultured tweeting en français. For those who don’t speak French, “manqué” means “unfulfilled.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this version of Dr. Thomas Wayne was written as “a cheesy and tanned businessman” similar to 1980s Donald Trump. But it would be an unfulfilled Trump-like character, because Thomas Wayne doesn’t make it to his senile years, as he’s gunned down in the street.

Alec Baldwin won an Emmy last year for his Trump impression on SNL, so it seemed like a natural fit. Entertainment Weekly says Alec recently spoke to USA Today about the role, and he makes it seem like he was involved at one point, but not anymore.

“I’m no longer doing that movie. I’m sure there are 25 guys who can play that part.”

He also claims that the reason he left Joker was because of a “scheduling” issue. Entertainment Weekly seems a little skeptical about that excuse, saying that normally scheduling issues are resolved before an actor signs on to a film.

Based on that tweet, it maybe sounds like Alec wasn’t happy with the way the character was written. In the comic books, Dr. Thomas Wayne is a kindly billionaire and philanthropist. But Joker is giving us a Trump wannabe. Does that mean Joker will also give us a Batman inspired by Donald Trump Jr.? Please Todd Phillips, don’t give this family any ideas. I don’t have a strong enough gag reflex to handle hearing Donald talk about how good Ivanka would look in a Catwoman costume this Halloween.
