It’s the 150th anniversary of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, and it would appear Hollywood has decided to celebrate by lighting the whole thing on fire. There have been numerous film adaptations of Little Women over the years (I’m Winona-biased, but the best is the 1994 version). But there really hasn’t been a modern re-telling, until now. And after watching the trailer, you’ll be likely to be wishing they’d kept it that way.
Little Women is set for release late in September, which is appropriate, considering this movie looks like it’s the film equivalent of a pumpkin spice latte. This new, updated Little Women may be set in present-day, but nothing has really changed. The tagline is “New Generation, Same Sisters” and that’s an understatement. Three of the four sisters (played by actresses Sarah Davenport, Allie Jennings, Melanie Stone, and Elise Jones) have that type of brown hair that makes them look like background characters from 19 Kids & Counting. Also, they still call their mom “Marmee” and she’s played by Lea Thompson.
This still looks like the same old movie to me, which makes no sense. If you’re going to go to all the trouble of updating/making a huge mess of a classic story, then really go all the way with it. Instead of being just some random writer, Jo is now a successful online fan fiction writer. Meg still gets married straight out of high school, but it happens in Vegas to her math teacher. Beth gets sick and dies from eating Tide pods. Amy’s desire to be rich and famous leads her to the lucrative world of being an Instagram influencer. And Marmee, who now goes by Marmager, dedicates her life to selling her family to the E! Network.
