ABC Is Reportedly Ready To Announce A “Roseanne” Spin-Off Starring Sara Gilbert

Not long after ABC canceled their highly-rated Roseanne revival, there was news that it could possibly be re-tooled to focus on Darlene, played by Sara Gilbert. According to TMZ, ABC is basically gargling with salt water and practicing “unique New York” in the mirror right now, because they could announce the Darlene spin-off sometime this week.

Sources say that ABC wants to move fast on Roseanne 3.0 and things sped up when Tom Werner got involved. Tom’s company Carsey-Werner has produced Roseanne since the beginning, and he reportedly went directly to the top of ABC to keep the show alive. Their discussion was two-parts: one, how to do the show without Roseanne, and two, how to produce the show without Roseanne who was an executive producer. Apparently it could potentially get a little messy.

ABC believes they have good cause to fire Roseanne, but she could argue that as both star and executive producer, she’s contractually owed money for her participation in creating the show. TMZ thinks ABC could get around this by arguing that by changing it from Roseanne to Darlene, it’s a different show. I don’t know if that’s the title they’re going with, but my money’s on that or You Can Dar-Lean On Me. ABC would have to be very specific that it was a different show, because there’s talk that Roseanne starring Roseanne could be saved by a right-leaning streaming service.

ABC also wants to save the show, because they felt bad for Roseanne’s crew who turned down work because they knew the revival would get a second season, and now they’re all out of a job.

It’s not known how ABC will announce the new and improved Roseanne now starring Darlene, or what the details of this new show are. But if they think they’re going to run into an intellectual property or contract issue with Roseanne, then the easiest way out of all of this would be to announce that the FBI has a new, wacky family in the Witness Protection Program. Please welcome, Darla Carter, her family (minus one loud-mouth mother), and their couch that is now draped in a quilt.
