Damian Lewis Will Play Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford In A Movie

During Rob Ford’s term as mayor of Toronto (I should get a pin), one thing you heard a lot while he was knocking old ladies over, smoking crack or bragging about having enough pussy to eat at home was that it all felt like a movie. Enough people must have said it, because Hollywood is making a movie about the late Rob Ford. Unfortunately, Hollywood isn’t powerful enough to bring Chris Farley back from the dead for the role he was born to play. The Hollywood Reporter says that Rob Ford will be played by Damian Lewis in a film called Run This Town.

Kit Magazine broke the news by saying that Damian Lewis arrived a few minutes late for their interview because he was busy getting fitted for prosthetics to play Toronto’s 64th mayor. Run This Town will be about a reporter trying to expose a scandal involving a politician “who doesn’t play by the rules.” The reporter will be played by Ben Platt. That sounds a lot like the female reporter, Robyn Doolittle, who exposed Rob Ford. Robyn isn’t crazy about the fact that it would appear the part has been re-written as a man.

Entertainment Tonight says that Ben Platt responded to Robyn’s criticism, saying that he plays a “totally fictionalized character.” But of course he is! The fact that they picked a guy who looks like Damian Lewis to play a guy who looked like Rob Ford should tell you they’re not exactly committed to realism here.

THR says that all characters in the film, besides the character of Rob Ford, have been made up. The rest of the cast includes Nina Dobrev, Mena Massoud, Scott Speedman, and Jennifer Ehle. Filming is underway in Toronto. Run This Town will be told against the backdrop of the last year of Rob Ford’s mayoral term. He died in 2016 at the age of 46 after a battle with cancer.

This is going to be a challenge for Damian. Not only is he required to master a GTA accent, but he’s got to pull of a Jamaican one as well. I know that the other characters are fictional, but I absolutely promise I’ll see this movie twice in the theater if I can be guaranteed a scene of Damian’s Rob Ford fighting an obnoxious Canadian pop star named “Dustin Barber” in a club.
