Lorde’s Instagram Story Featuring A Bathtub And A Whitney Houston Reference Went Over About As Well As You’d Imagine

Lorde is in hot water (sorry not sorry) with Whitney Houston fans for posting an Instagram story featuring a luxurious bathtub with the caption “And iiii will always love you.” And now she should probably just go ahead and get into a witness protection program, or something, because she’ll never live it down. Brandy probably has a hit out on her.

Here’s the image that sealed Lorde’s fate.

Oh Lorde, what have you done. Too soon, sis. Too fucking soon.

As you know, Whitney Houston died from drowning (or heartbreak, depending on who you ask) in a bathtub in 2012. Either Lorde is a calculating and callous stunt queen who’s been taking Scientology improv workshops with Kirstie Alley, or it was a horrible mistake. Because it’s the internet, people immediately jumped to both conclusions! I hope the bath was a good one because all of the comments that flooded in would have been a hell of a cold floor to step out onto.

Of course it was unintentional. Lorde is only 21 years old after all. She would have been a teen in New Zealand when Whitney died and she wasn’t even born when Whitney recorded I Will Always Love You. Also, Lorde just does not seem the type. Besides, it could happen to any of us. You film a little Instagram story about a ham sandwich you’re about to enjoy with the caption “dream a little dream” or you are about to take a massive dump so you snap a picture of your awaiting toilet and caption it “it’s now or never”. You didn’t mean anything by it, it’s just an unfortunate coincidence born of ignorance, not malice. What, too soon?

Lorde has since posted an explanation and an apology.

And a sob in the dark.

If Lorde doesn’t name her next album Mortified, it’ll have been a real missed opportunity.
