Your aunt Patty’s favorite show, Modern Family, is celebrating its 200th episode and contemplating the end of the road as it limps its way through its 9th season. And The Hollywood Reporter says that season 10 will probably be the last. That’s sad news for the ridiculously well paid cast. How will Ariel Winter afford the modesty pixels she has to carry with her at all times?
How sure are we that the Pritchett-Dunphy children will all be headed for the poor house where they will have to sneak bites of oakem to keep her bellies full like Oliver Twist? Pretty sure. According to THR:
While ABC renewed the show for a 10th season, Levitan and Lloyd confirmed that, as of now, that will be its last. (ABC and producers 20th Century Fox Television would have to ink the large cast to new, expensive deals should they want the show to go on to an 11th season.)
“Our plan is to end it at 10. If we can leave with most of our audience wanting more, I think that’s the right way to do it. Never say never, but I just can’t imagine that we’d go past that,” Levitan says.
THR says the show’s creators, Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, would like to go out with a big Shakespearean bang. Christopher says that means a birth, a death or a wedding. On Frasier (another Levitan-Lloyd creation) they managed to shoehorn in all three. I never watched Frasier so I’ll have to assume it had a satisfactory ending because I never heard your aunt Patty complain about it. She can expect something similar with MF.
“So it may be some conversation that starts there, but we haven’t figured out the episode we’re doing three weeks from now. It’s just a little over a year and a half from now. We’ve got time to think about that.”
One thing that won’t be happening is anything overtly political. MF will not go there. If you want your sitcoms to include a healthy dose of politics, you’re going to have to stick to the new Roseanne. If the end of MF is giving you the sads, there may be reason to perk up. The idea of a spin-off is on the table although nothing has been discussed “substantively”. I haven’t watched the show in years but I talked to your Aunt Patty about it and she says if it doesn’t involve Stella, she’s not interested.
