Bryan Singer Has Stepped Away From The Freddie Mercury Biopic Due To “Illness”

Most of us can probably empathize with creepy director Bryan Singer (just work with me here). There have been times that you banged in sick for work and you were in no way sick. You were taking a mental health day, or had an errand to run, or had to go to jail. (A former boss of mine once utilized sick days and vacation time to secretly do his time in prison!) It’s a time-honored tradition to claim you’re dying of consumption or whatever when you’re healthy as a horse but need to absent yourself from the office. The Hollywood Reporter says that Fox has halted production on the Freddie Mercury biopic due to Singer’s “personal health matter.” It probably has NOTHING to do with him lapping Kevin Spacey in the Dudes Who (Allegedly) Creeped On Underage Boys event. (Imagine those Olympics? *shudder*)

Bohemian Rhapsody starring Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek as rock icon Freddie Mercury had been filming in London, and took a break for Turkey Day. When everyone returned, crickets sounded from the director’s chair. Singer didn’t show. Fox eventually had to release a statement.

“Twentieth Century Fox Film has temporarily halted production on Bohemian Rhapsody due to the unexpected unavailability of Bryan Singer,” reads Fox’s full statement. The crew received force majeure letters today, says one insider.

A “force majeure letter” is basically a letter stating that something bad happened that was out of their control so the crew can’t sue them for being out of work. The crew probably weren’t wasn’t in a state of shock over this. Things on the Bohemian Rhapsody set were said to be tense because Singer was allegedly doing the Lohan.

For example, insiders tell THR that producers and his star had grown tired of Singer’s behavior, which saw him routinely show up late to set. Another source has said that a cinematographer had to step in and direct during a previous “non-showing.”

Singer’s rep told the BBC that Singer hoped to be back on set after the holidays. Early Christmas vacay?

The director’s representative said it was “a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family. Bryan hopes to get back to work on the film soon after the holidays.”

This “personal health matter” has some intriguing timing. We’re in the middle of the Outing Celebrity Pervs Initiative 2017. Powerful showbiz figure Singer has had stories about his creepy behavior when it comes to the boys (that might have come out wrong) swirling around him for years. And he chooses now to ditch a major motion picture in the middle of filming?

Singer’s troubles started way back in 1997.  Extras from his movie Apt Pupil brought a lawsuit against him for allegedly forcing them to strip naked for a shower scene. It was dropped for insufficient evidence. Fast-forward to 2014, when Singer was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting an underage actor/model in a civil lawsuit. The plaintiff eventually dropped it. That was in April. In May of that same year, Singer was again sued for allegedly sexually assaulting a different minor around the time of the Superman Returns premiere (which, ahem, starred Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor). This accuser also dropped HIS suit. And those are just the court-documented situations. Last month, Singer quit Twitter when his name started trending right after the Kevin Spacey story broke.

Maybe he’s actually sick. Or maybe he’s hiding in the perv bunker, praying he’s not about to be outed as the gay James Toback. And probably filling out his “Sorry Not Sorry/Going To Rehab” form apology just in case. You decide!
