James Cameron Explain Why Only Rose Could Fit On That Door In “Titanic”

The holidays are here, and there is only one topic in the world that you can talk about with your entire family without pissing anyone off just as they pass the gravy: why couldn’t Rose AND Jack fit on that door and both live in Titanic?!

Even Kate Winslet admitted last year to Jimmy Kimmel that it was some fucked up shit that Rose didn’t let her man up on the door with her and float their way to survival. Instead, we all know Rose ditched both Jack and the Heart of the Ocean into the Atlantic. Director James Cameron has dogged the question in the 20 years since the movie debuted, and he gave Vanity Fair a rather cold explanation:

“And the answer is very simple because it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies. Very simple… I think it’s all kind of silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later.”

First, that movie took up two VHS tapes, so I find it hard to believe the script was that short. Second, you know what else is silly, James?! Your flip-flop! James seemed to entertain the possibility of Jack’s survival when he popped up on a 2012 episode of Mythbusters, where the team determined the iceberg-doomed duo could have both survived if Rose had shimmed her petticoat to one side and let Jack up from the water. James seemed to pooh-pooh that idea earlier this year:

“They’re fun guys and I loved doing that show with them, but they’re full of shit.”

Apparently, ol’ Jimmy spent a day of filming getting his skin pruned while he tested out just the right door that’d ensure Jack became fish food:

“I was in the water with the piece of wood putting people on it for about two days getting it exactly buoyant enough so that it would support one person with full free-board, meaning that she wasn’t immersed at all in the 28-degree water so that she could survive the three hours it took until the rescue ship got there.”

In short, I still don’t think James knows a damn thing about his own movie. #JusticeForJack
