Frida, the heroic Mexican rescue dog!
It seems like there’s been nothing but horrific and terrible to news to come out of the 7.1 earthquake in Mexico, but there has been some soul-lifting good news about its heroes, including, Frida the Navy dog who has become of symbol of inspiration (and style, thanks to her custom-made doggy goggles and booties).
Frida, named after Frida Kahlo (DUH), is a 7-year-old Labrador who is a member of the Mexican Navy’s canine unit. Reuters says that in the course of her career, she’s saved 12 lives and has put her skills to very good use in disasters such as the earthquake in the Mexican state of Oaxaca two weeks ago, a landslide in Guatemala and an earthquake in Ecuador last year. Navy Captain Armando Segura says that they don’t know how many lives she’s saved in Mexico City, because well, she’s still busy working to rescue as many people as possible.
Frida and her fellow dog rescuers use their nose to sniff out people trapped in the rubble and they can also get into places that humans can’t. There are other rescue dogs who have been brought in to search the rubble, but none of them have become as famous as Frida. The twitter account of Mexico’s president Enrique Peña Nieto gave it up for Frida’s bravery on Twitter:

And some have said that Frida should replace Diego Rivera on the 500-peso bill:

If Frida was put on the 500-peso, the 500-peso would become the least used bill of them all, because no one would want to part with it.
Frida’s human sidekick, Israel Arauz, says that she has about a year left before her sniffing nose gets weaker, and that’s when she’ll retire and live with him. But I’m sure Frida’s retired life won’t be all naps and ass sniffing (which is what I hope my retirement will be). I’m sure she’ll still make time to bless the people with her heroic presence at parades, like the one she was in last week.
If my dog could read human words, he’d probably pfft at this story, because has Frida ever accomplished the task of taking 300 naps in a row on the same day like he has? He’s a hater.
