Chrissy Metz Clarifies That Whole Thing About Being Contractually Obligated To Lose Weight

Because I’m a woman who loves to cry on my couch while wrapped in a blanket, I watch This Is Us. All I really want to know is when exactly Miguel swooped in and became everyone’s step-daddy. But until that inevitable touching moment is revealed, I’ve had to settle for the much less dramatic news that Kate – played by Chrissy Metz – is going to drop weight as the show goes on. Chrissy admitted last month in an interview with TV Line that she is contractually obligated to lose weight to correspond with her character’s weight loss via gastric bypass. It sounded like Chrissy would have to weigh-in with a producer every time she even looked at a craft service muffin. It turns out it’s not really like that.

Chrissy Metz clarified her comments to People at KIIS FMs Jingle Ball on Friday, and says she isn’t “contractually” obligated to lose weight.

“It wasn’t mandated in the contract, and I probably – if I ever said the word contract, I didn’t mean it in that way. I was pitched that the trajectory of Kate is that she’s going to lose weight. That is who and what’s going on.”

I think this qualifies as Chrissy’s first out-of-context quote clarification. Congratulations Chrissy, you’re officially a famous person! Next up, a bitchy “Do you know who I am???” caught on camera outside of The Nice Guy by TMZ.

There’s way less pressure on Chrissy now that we know she isn’t at risk of getting fired if she doesn’t lose the weight. Besides, if worse comes to worse and Chrissy hits a weight-loss plateau, the producers can always call in the cinematographer from Paul Abdul’s Promise of a New Day video to direct a couple episodes until she gets where she needs to be, weight-wise. Anything is possible with the magic of television and a jacked-up aspect ratio.
