Jimmy Fallon Will Host The 2017 Golden Globe Awards

Earlier today, NBC sent out a press release (that I choose to believe was faxed by an excited Kenneth Parcell) announcing the host of the 74th Golden Globe Awards next year. Sadly, Ricky Gervais isn’t going to host for a fifth time, which means he’ll be stuck drinking pints and cackling at celebrities from the comfort of his own couch. Instead, NBC announced that they gave the job to NBC’s goofy and hyperactive son Jimmy Fallon.

The Golden Globes is the one where they encourage everyone to get hammered drunk, right? Uh oh. No no, I’m sure it will be fine! But…the Beverly Hilton might want to install some handrails in the grand ballroom, just in case. Here’s NBC’s statement:

“We’re thrilled to announce Jimmy as host of the 74th Annual Golden Globes. This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited awards show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year.”

Jimmy confirmed the news on Twitter while also getting in a small dig at Donald Trump.

This will be Jimmy Fallon’s second time hosting a big awards show. Jimmy also hosted the 62nd Emmys back in 2010. And if I recall correctly, it wasn’t a total mess. Although I don’t think Jimmy Fallon had reached peak-Jimmy Fallon yet. This time is going to be very different. It’s going to take hours to give out all the awards people’s agents paid for. Announcing each award category will take a solid 25 minutes, thanks to Jimmy having to do a series of impressions of every single nominee. Then it will take another 15 minutes for every winner to accept their award because Jimmy will no doubt force them play some bar game or make them lip-sync for it first.
