The Last Movie In The “Divergent” Series Could Go Direct-To-Television

Just like the insanely successful franchise The Hunger Games, the Divergent films were based on a series of young adult novels about a girl rising up and fighting an evil government in a world where people have names like “Tris” and “Four.” But unlike The Hunger Games, people sort of lost interest in paying $15 (plus popcorn) to watch Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort running around in depressing future times couture. And now there’s a chance the only way to find out what happens to Shailene and Ansel will be to watch it on TV.

There’s still a fourth and final Divergent movie left to be made. Unfortunately, the third film, Allegiant, didn’t do as well. In fact, it only made $179 million on a budget of $100 million. Variety says that thanks to those shitty box-office numbers from the third film, Lionsgate is thinking about pulling a Labor Pains by releasing the fourth and final film in the Divergent series on TV.

That’s of course if it gets made at all. According to Variety, Ascendant was supposed to start filming this summer. When they realized it might be a flop, they put filming on hold. They don’t even know if Shailene, Ansel, and Miles Teller will be in the last movie. When asked about it at Comic-Con earlier today, Shailene said she didn’t know what was going on and that she’d have to “find out what the details are.

Ascendant was supposed to be released in March 2017, but Lionsgate kicked it out of that spot and gave it to the new Power Rangers movie. Variety says Lionsgate will probably go through with releasing it on television as a way to segue into a possible Divergent television series. So far they haven’t pitched it to any networks. “Try Netflix, they’ll take anything” said Adam Sandler.

I’m actually a little sad to hear that this last Divergent movie might not get a theater release. No theater release means no promotional tour, which means I wont’ get to find out what Simi Valley hippie nonsense Shailene Woodley is currently doing. Is she still eating bugs? Making her own toothpaste? Sunning her vagine? The inner crystal-healer in me needs to know these things.

Here’s Shailene, who finally got a cellphone, in New York a few days ago.
