Diamond and Pearl!

Out of all of Prince’s many muses (Wendy & Lisa, Apollonia, Sheena Easton, Sheila E., Carmen Electra, etc…), Vanity will forever be my favorite, but Diamond and Pearl also hold a special place in my memories. When Diamonds and Pearls came out, I was at an age where I understood the beautifully nasty lyrics that came out of Prince’s mouth. “Gett Off” may or may not have been the song that summoned the first pube out of my crotch.

Prince’s muses and the two pieces of bread that made up that rhinestone and sex sandwich above were Diamond and Pearl. Prince originally wanted to get twins to play Diamond and Pearl in his video for “Gett Off,” but he instead cast dancer Robia LaMorte as Pearl and Lori Elle (that’s a hot drag queen name) as Diamond. Diamond and Pearl were the precious jewels that flanked the miniature purple swizzle stick all through the Diamonds and Pearls “era.”

They were also in the videos for “Cream,” “Diamonds and Pearls,” “Strollin,” and they went on tour with him. And they were on the technologically advanced album cover for Diamonds and Pearls. That album was one of the first albums I bought with my allowance money, and there’s still pieces of my tween mind stuck to the walls of my old bedroom. Because the hologram album cover blew my young mind. That cover was my Avatar back then.

Prince also decided that he didn’t want to speak while promoting Diamonds and Pearls, so his muses did most of the talking for him back then.

After Prince tuck Diamond and Pearl into his jewelry box of past muses, Robia went into acting. She played Brandon Walsh’s girlfriend of a minute on a couple of episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210 and she played Jenny on Buffy for 2 seasons. Wikipedia says that Robia eventually went the Vanity way by finding God and becoming a born again Christian. Lori Elle now goes by Lori Werner and she went on to dance in a bunch of Broadway shows.

Robia has been tweeting about Prince, and this morning, she tweeted this:

YES! Someone make this reunion happen. There’s probably going to be 9,743,927 Prince tribute shows, but the only one I really care about is the one where Diamond and Pearl slip on their old Contempo Casual dresses from the “Get Off” video and bust out these moves once again:
