Viola Davis Blew Her Back Out Doing A Sex Scene
Working for Shonda Rhimes is no small feat of strength, perseverance and just shutting your damn dirty mouth! Ask just about anyone on any of her shows, but, specifically, Katherine Heigl, Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington. Now it seems even their physical health is at risk. And when I say physical, I mean “physical“ wink wink.
Viola Davis spoke to Sway in the Morning (via Daily Mail) about getting hurt while shooting a genitals-on-genitals scene in How to Get Away With Murder. After filming the scene, which was with her on-screen man Nate, played by Billy Brown, she says she asked Shonda and the writers to tone it down while she recovered:
“I blew my back out. He threw me up against a wall. All I can say is I was totally committed to the scene. I just told them to slow it down for a minute. I’m going to get back into it. I have to. It’s Shondaland! You know, they’re gonna have me doing all kinds of stuff with all kinds of people.”
At Paley Centre in November she had this to say about shooting sex scenes:
“People have sex onscreen, and, now, we know people don’t have sex like that. At some point I said, “I’ve got to take the wig off before somebody throws me up against the wall”. Who gets thrown up against a wall!? I mean, I’d throw my neck out. Those scenes I feel go too far.”
And last year she said to ABC News:
“I will say that [I’m] not comfortable [with those scenes], but why should I be, you know? You’re having sex. I mean, how many times do people have sex in front of a lot of people, unless you’re a porn star?”
AND! Dios mio, it seems like she really doesn’t like faking sex in front of cameras. She told Jimmy Kimmel that she gives her mom money on Thursday nights to go to the casino and play those penny slots so she doesn’t have to see her break her back, neck, poon and whatever else is getting injured on that hazardous set. I don’t watch the show, but it sounds to me like it should be called How To Murder It In The Ratings Game With Hot Sex Scenes Middle Aged Ladies Will Spill Their Wine Over.
(Note from Michael: I watch HTGAWM and if Viola’s body needs more time to recover, I’ll gladly be her body double and do those sex scenes with Nate for her. But Shonda will just have to find a way to explain why Annalise suddenly becomes a skinny fat gay Asian/Latino dude when she gets naked and gets her fuck on.)
