Rene Angelil, Celine Dion’s Husband, Has Died

It’s official: 2016 and cancer are in cahoots to really make this the year in sad. People reports that Celine Dion’s husband of 21 years Rene Angelil is riding shotgun next to Alan Rickman on the ride to the afterworld. Rene died this morning at their Las Vegas home. He was 73. Rene’s rep released this statement:

“Rene Angelil, 73, passed away this morning as his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer. The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time.”

Rene had been fighting cancer for over 17 years. He was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998 and went through several surgeries to destroy it. Doctors removed a tumor from his throat in 2014. Celine canceled her show in Las Vegas and a tour through Asia in 2014 to be with Rene. She went back to blowing diamond dust into the ears of her fans in Las Vegas last year when Rene seemed to be getting better. Sources tell TMZ that Renee’s death was a surprise to everyone, because lately he’s been feeling healthier and even had business meetings planned today.

The hummingbird jewel of Canada and Rene first met in 1980 when he agreed to manage her career. She was 12 years old and he was 38. They started dating 7 years later and married in an opulent ceremony in Montreal in 1994. Celine Dion looking like she was being eaten by a chandelier will forever be one of my favorite bridal looks. Celine and Rene made 3 children together: 14-year-old Ruh-naaay Charles and 5-year-old twins, Nelson and Eddy. Rene has 3 children from a previous relationship.

When Celine and Rene got together together everyone side-eyed that situation, but it seemed to work for them and she was so devoted to him. When I saw her Las Vegas show (oh yes, I did), she dedicated a song to him and everyone around me go so teary. And now is not the time to quote “My Heart Will Go On.”

Rest in peace, Rene.
