George Zimmerman is in police custody again, but who really cares about that when a true Southern California icon is now in pussy cow heaven. If you grew up in Southern California like I did, then a piece of your childhood died today. No “sick” day from school was complete without singing pussy cow (don’t ever try to tell me it’s “go see Cal”) while watching a Cal Worthington commercial. Cal Worthington was the Car Dealership King of the West and his commercials ruled daytime for decades. And now TMZ says that Cal Worthington is dead.
Cal passed away on Sunday at his ranch in Orland, CA. He was 92. Cal’s family told TMZ that he died while watching football. They didn’t say what his cause of death was.
Wikipedia says that Cal opened up his first dealership in Huntington Park, CA in 1949. From the beginning, he used TV to advertise his car dealership and he used to sponsor a three-hour live country music show on Saturday and Sunday mornings. In the 1960s, he started making the commercials which turned him into a legendary car dealership icon. At Cal’s peak, he had 29 dealerships in California, Alaska, Arizona, Texas, Nevada and Washington. Most of his 29 dealerships shut down, but there’s still outlets in Anchorage, Carlsbad and Long Beach.
Rest in peace, Cal Worthington. You are now in heaven with your “dog Spot.” Pussy cow forever!
