WIN News lived up to their name on Wednesday night when Kerryn Johnston opened up the broadcast with the line that I hope becomes her new catchphrase.
“Good evening. Tonight I’m going to sound like a drunk.”
That’s almost exactly like the opening line Kathie Lee Gifford used during her early days at Today. She would open with, “I’m Kathie Lee Gifford and this morning I’m going to sound like a drunk.” Producers decided that saying she’s Kathie Lee and saying she’s going to sound like a drunk was redundant, so they cut the drunk part out.
After Kerryn Johnston declared that she was as drunk as all of WIN’s viewers, WIN issued a statement saying that it was all a technical glitch. Kerryn wasn’t drunk, she was stoned. No, Kerryn wasn’t drunk and she wasn’t stoned. She was just making fun of herself during a technical rehearsal to check sound levels. Someone (aka Kerryn’s RIVAL!) accidentally aired the taped technical rehearsal. WIN’s news director said:
“This is a newsreader who sets a very high standard for herself. To have it go to air when it was not intended to, has been more than embarrassing for her. Kerryn has been presenting news for over two decades and has never put a foot wrong. I’m sure our viewers will understand.’’
I’m sure viewers would understand if Kerryn was plastered. You’d have to get drunk too to talk about the roo cull.
