Color Me BAFTA: Colorful Looks From The Red Carpet
Just because all of the BAFTA acting nominations went to white people, that doesn’t mean the white people that were nominated are afraid of a little color (not sure we can’t say the same for the BAFTA president Prince William). While some stars like Margot Robbie, who looked like she just came from a beloved aunt’s funeral (with Olivia Colman looking like said beloved aunt), went for basic black, and some like Renée Zellweger and Scarlett Johansson opted for a pastel palette, a few ladies took the opportunity to brighten up the foggy London town night by putting the “u” in colour. Take for example Florence Pugh whose hot pink housecoat doubles as a parachute in case the feds come knocking at the brothel door and she has to make a quick exit out of a 4th story window and hop into the horse drawn carriage waiting below.
“1917” And Joaquin Phoenix Were Big Winners At Last Night’s BAFTAs
2020 was a big year for 1917 which won four BAFTAs last night. That’s what was going on in ENGLAND while most Americans were busy watching JLo get the most out of that Groupon she used for 8 free pole dancing classes to prepare for Hustlers. She was never going to their little awards show anyway! But the lack of Hustlers nominations just meant more for 1917 which won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Director for Sam Mendes. It also picked up wins for special visual effects, sound, and production design. Parasite won for Best Film Not In The English Language and Best Original Screenplay by Han Jin-won and Bong Joon-ho. Another big winner was Joaquin Phoenix who won Most Tweeted About Acceptance Speech for Leading Actor For Joker, and Hardest Working Suit.
The BAFTAs Acknowledge That There’s Zero Diversity In Their Acting Nominations This Year
Not very long after the 2020 Golden Globe nominations were announced, the internet quickly pointed out that once again, there were no women in the category for Best Director. You might think that kind of oversight would set the standard for the rest of the award season nominations. There’s got to be one voice of reason that saw the Golden Globes nomination backlash, and opened a nomination committee meeting with “So…let’s make an effort not to trend on Twitter for the wrong reasons, agreed?”
But when it came to the BAFTAs, they actually managed to bring even less diversity than the Golden Globes. The 2020 BAFTA nominations were announced today, and every single actor and actress nominated is white.
Duchess Kate Wore Princess Diana’s Earrings To The BAFTAs
Sure, Duchess Kate and Duchess Meghan may be friendlier now that THE QUEEN laid down the gauntlet at Christmas and said they better straighten up their act or else she’d only let them use Prince Philip as their unlicensed royal driver. Nevertheless, if I was in Kate’s shoes, that wouldn’t keep me from using the occasional outing to remind a bitch who is HBIC and who has the code to the better royal jewel room. It appears Kate did just that with her choice of earrings last night at the BAFTAs in London.
According To The BAFTA Nominations, Everybody Loves “The Favourite”
Nominations for the Pinky’s Up Oscars, aka the BAFTA Awards, were announced in London today and The Gagabot 3000 is one more step closer to achieving its goal of total global domination. Lady Gaga was nominated for the 99th Leading Actress out of a room filled with 100 Leading Actresses for A Star Is Born. Joining her are Glenn Close (#98 for The Wife), Melissa McCarthy (#97 for Can You Ever Forgive Me), Olivia Coleman (#96 for The Favourite), and Viola Davis (#95 for Widows). It’s kind of crazy that the Tea & Crumpets Oscars only has one British person nominated in this category. Maybe they have an exchange program with the Fully Loaded Fries Oscars, since we always seem to nominate entire villages full of British actors for our little award show comes up.
Mostly Everyone Did Black At The BAFTAs With Varying Degrees Of Success
It would have been a nearly all-black fashion show at the BAFTAs in London last night, in honor of the Time’s Up movement. But the class average was brought down by Duchess Kate (who was prevented from wearing black by royal no-politics protocol), and Frances McDormand (who just didn’t feel like it and showed up in pink-on-black instead).
For mostly everyone else, it was a multitude of black. Or black with a random kick of not-black, like Allison Janney. And by random, I mean a satin choker bolero on top of a Bibhu Mohapatra dress. It looks like a shirt made from the bottom half of Roger the Alien from American Dad that was put on backwards and upside down.
