Nightowl - I gave this long and thoughtful consideration (I'm serious, I really did) and after rejecting giving up dlisted and the sweet nectar (because those are my two home-remedies for sanity in an insane world), I decided to give up .....peanut butter. OK, SHUT UP, I know it sounds stupid but I've become seriously addicted to peanut butter over the course of the past year. I didn't even notice it until a couple of weeks ago. I realized the first thing I went for in the morning was peanut butter toast. Then I saw how I was was ladeling it on bread and crackers for a snack, and (I can't believe I'm admitting this "in public" - thank God it's anonymous) - I actually scooped it onto a spoon, poured chocolate syrup on it and ate it. That was kind of my "Get your shit together" moment. So, as of today, no peanut butter for the next 40 days and nights.

I really need to get a life.

Hey, CSG, Cappy, that's so heartbreaking. My cousin's husband passed away last year after going into a coma because the drugs he was on gave him a heart attack when the cops arrested him at his home. For years he would show up at family parties and there would always be something that would go on because he'd get drunk or was high and he'd get out f control.
I don't think his condition can compare to what you have seen (he had a job that paid well and his co-workers were unaware of anything, I didn't know he was an addict) it was heart breaking to see how devastated his family was.
I hope everything turns out ok for your friend and brother.

Those types of outrageous behaviors are what make me think there has to be some kind of genetic (mental illness?) component to addiction. I mean, think about it, who would willingly act like that? I think what they have to control is NOT taking the first drink, hit etc. Because once it starts, for whatever reason, it can't stop.

The one thing I've noticed with the people I've known with substance problems is that they don't think that they deserve a better life. And what really sucks is that they're great people who do deserve to have a great life, but somehow they got it into their head that they're not good enough. While I don't agree with Martin Sheen that it's on par with cancer, the devastation that's caused by this disease is comparable. And I believe it's a disease because no one would willingly or voluntarily enslave themself to it. There has to be a genetic component.
