Calling people idiots based on *their* opinions is a little, well, idiotic. And yes, her name is on the petition, click on the link in MK's post.

Are you kidding? That is EXACTLY the reason to call people idiots, because of idiotic, asinine opinions. It is, in fact, an excellent reason.

My opinion is that people who suggest or even state outright that Natalie Portman is supporting Polanski because he's Jewish is IDIOTIC. Completely and indefensibly idiotic. Yeah, I said it. I'll say it again! I never said they didn't have the right to the opinion, now did I? By the way, I also think that people who think that the earth is flat and that "God hates fags" are idiots and worse. They have the legal right to be those things, but I have the right to call them out on it.

Why is this such a difficult concept?

It's a long petition and I said I did not recall seeing her name on it. I'm disappointed that her name is on it and I absolutely disagree with her on this point. Absolutely. I also think that her position on this Polanski thing and on Galiano are totally UNrelated. Who among us could pass this same standard of consistency that you guys are holding up? You? Me? NO ONE could pass this test because it is patently impossible. Worse, It's a non issue.

One more thing (to CranberryApple...), I think there are a couple of reasons why Natalie didn't say anything about this douche while holding her Oscar the other night. the first is that at that point the video proof hadn't surfaced yet and there were still conflicting reports, including an eyewitness report, about what happened the night he was arrested. Two, and this is a big one, that moment with her holding that Oscar will be played and replayed for the rest of her life. Even if she had wanted to say something, any publicist worth their salary would have insisted that she didn't. It would have forever linked her and her biggest night to that ass. That would have been a terrible mistake. Kind of like Melissa Leo's dress...

I agree with most of the comments here. I am disgusted by Galliano's remarks but Natalie is a total hypocrite. How can she condemn one type of hate but condone violence against women and children, because that is exactly what she did when she defended child rapist Polanski. Was it because Polanski is a Jew or is it because as a child star she thinks raping underaged girls is normal behavior? Either way, it's good to know that her Harvard degree did not give her much common sense. Oh, and I love how she was speechless about Galliano after receiving her Oscar. She had her PR person write up a statement for the NYTimes but she can't deal with off the cuff questions about antisemitism from a reporter. She seems like someone who has built her image on being a genius but in reality is just another rich sorority snob from Long Island.

Why did she even make her feelings public? She very easily could have contacted Galliano/Dior herself, privately, and made her sentiments known that way. I guess we're all supposed to fawn over her now for being so loving towards EVERYONE, and being such a big person to distance herself from him.

As someone who started an acting career as a child, maybe she's not capable of grasping that what Polanski did is abnormal in the real world. Who knows. I too am shocked by Galliano, though. I would not have thought he would say those things. Yikes.

It is too bad that the US forgot so quickly what the Nazi party did to our troops overseas and neo-Nazi groups are allowed to spread hate under Freedom of Speech. I think you're not getting my point. I'm taking this case as an example of what USUALLY happens in the west when we talk about other religions or race.
This incident may have happened in France and i'm glad they have laws there against such things but what about our society in general?
