I don't think there is a magical age to start talking about sex, like some people are astonished an 11 year old would watch a show about sex, I know damn well when I was 11, I was VERY interested in what sex was all about, but nowhere near ready to actually start having it. And that's the thing, the time to start talking to kids about sex is when they start asking questions about it. You keep it taboo and you're going to end up with kids with AIDS or 5 kids by the time they're 20 type thing. I think this show offers a wonderful way to talk about the consequences of sex.

This show needs to be canceled. It is glamorizing teen pregnancies. In our world of non stop reality shows, the kids out there ARE seeing that anything can get you on tv and magazines. But when the cameras start following them around showing them dating other people, fighting, etc. it's just making it into another reality show.

Which teen mom are you watching because I don't see any "glamorizing" when I watch that show. The point has been made that allowing teens to be paid to be featured on a show is somehow an insenstive for young to teens everywhere to run out and get pregnant but I am one to dissent. Cameras dont follow these people around to make news, they do it because they are news, this is what the public demands and the "media" is there to fulfill that demand, no matter how depraved or unsavory it may be. The thing to do isnt to censor or limit what can and should be shown on tv to a moral sensitivity but to use these sorts of things to teach the young ones what happens when you make certain decisions in life or let the young ones see what certain decisions can lead them to. If anyone is influenced to get pregnant by a show like this then theres something deeper going on you know.

Interestingly I watched the first season with my 13 y/o son and I can't tell you all how many times he commented on how ansolutely fucking RETARDED these *children* and their parents are. I'm pretty pleased with that. :)
As far as glamourizing teen pregnancy goes, I think there definately is some of that going on disguised as MTV acting as if they are trying to show the 'reality' of being a teen mom. I'm 33 y/o and had my first child @ 19, got married, got divorced, got married again, had my 2nd child and I'm getting divorced again (don't look at me like that) while working 2 jobs and going to school. My point is that even as an adult, raising kids and raising them *well* is an ardous task at best. These kids have no idea what the fuck they're doing and neither do their parents and now they're celebrities with no real sense of what its like to really struggle. To lay in bed and cry because your family really doesn't support you on any level or the father decided to trapse off across the US in search of pussy from high school. Do I watch the show? Sometimes, but it takes a fair bit of Crown for me to really swallow it w/out wanting to punch my tv.

That's 1154.00 per week...depending on where you live, I live in NY, and I can say its not living rich but its doable even with a child. I watch this show with my pre-teen daughter and she is ALWAYS the first to point out what a loser the boyfriend is or what an idiot the moms are for not keeping their legs crossed and finishing their education. She is super harsh on all of them and I can assure you that she in NO WAY looks up to ANY of these girls!!! Well, she sorta did with Tyler and Catelynn because they were smart enough to choose adoption but not so much after she found out they're brother and sister.
Maybe her reaction is not common for every little 11 yo in the world but it's certainly true for her. It has also led us to many discussions about sex and birth control, WAY before the fact of her being confronted with the possibility of getting pregnant. We usually end each episode with "too bad she ruined her life so young, eh?" And then we talk about what losers the "dads" are again and how clueless and enabling both sets of grandparents usually are. This goes for both TM and 16 and pregnant.

@JUNIPER, I enjoy the show, Im not trashing it, there are some on the show that deserve to be trashed, such as Amber, overall it's a good show, and Ive never seen it being glamourized, they all cry, struggle, not one that Ive seen were they all WOW this is great, we fucked up our lives, we cant go back to school, got NO money, got no skills yet, cant get a decent job, Im not bashing anyone except for the obvious stupidity that goes along with the show. Ive watched both seasons.
Wow, a pic of Amber standing up! Amazing! I never saw two young people lay around as much as Amber and Gary. Poor Leah just wanders around trying to keep herself busy while her parents lay on the couch arguing. It scares me because these people probably act a little better than usual with the cameras on them, imagine what they are really like if they weren't being filmed.
I have mixed feelings about this show. I do think it glamourizes teen pregnancy, although it tries to show how hard it is. In reality, teens don't get decent apartments with no job or part time jobs. These people get them because they are getting paid to be on a TV show. I think many teens that watch this don't even realize that fact and think they could do it.
PS. That tattoo is vile, just like Amber.

I agree with Pearl Necklace.
Even if it is not this show's intention, it does glorify teen motherhood to a degree. Most of these kids come from small towns and in the case of Amber, she doesn't even have her GED. Is there any way in hell she could be earning $60K a year and be on the cover of various magazines if it wasn't for this show? I wouldn't be at all shocked if this was a bit like winning the lottery for her.

In one 911 call Amber made she stated twice in about 20 seconds "this is Amber Portwood, you know from Teen Mom"...I DO NOT believe in shunning teens who get pregnant nor do I oppose talks about birth control, options, sex ed in schools but this show is not realistic by any means. All the girls have cars, babysitters/and or grandparents to help with money, clothes, college, toys, anything. NO ONE is struggling on that show (and if they do it is completely their fault--except for the couple I mention next). Caitelynn and Tyler are the only ones who may be struggling and they gave their child up for adoption out of love. Living on 60k a year with a kid may not be ideal but it is completely doable seeing as though all these girls are spoiled beyond belief. I've lived on half of that supporting another person. Fun ? Hell no, but it was doable. The generation of instant gratification sees these shows as not a cautionary tale but "hey I can get pregnant and like be on magazines and be famous and like, get free stuff"...and NO, not all teens do this but I find this show disgusting. Shows like these just romanticize shitty situations - there's no need to be putting a girl like Amber on tv on a channel like MTV. This show isn't some PBS documentary, it's a shit reality show that allows for these girls obtain a certain level of fame while, like Pearly said, not addressing the causes of the behavior and solutions.
Like I said yesterday about the Kate friend bullshit - I can't wait for the day when women aren't made famous for the kids they push out of their vadge.
