Burning Dan Has Died
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's older brother Dan Gordon-Levitt, a fire-spinning flow artist, co-partner of HitRECord.org and a regular fixture at Burning Man, passed away sometime this week at the age of 36. The answer to the questions "Why? When? Where?" haven't been answered yet and I don't know if they will be, but JGL left this message on Twitter last night:

And this note was posted on Burning Dan's Facebook page:
Burning Dan, we will miss you.
you were a shining light for our entire community
and although I know you would want us to smile, dance, and flow
I'm going to take a few moments to be sad for your passing.For everyone who has not heard, Dan passed peacefully and unexpectedly Sunday night. In addition to founding and running Flow Temple, Dan was a celebrated poi-oneer who constantly challenged our thoughts on both how the tools could be used, and what good you could bring to the world through your art form.
He was also an incredibly sweet soul.
When we have information on a memorial service, we will pass it on.
Love you Dan.

Holidays at the Gordon-Levitt house must be a blast: rise with a wake and bake and then shrooms in the pasta sauce.
It's sad a lot of people view his life as a waste. He was a fire spinner, for fucks sake. If you're working in a store or a cubicle or an office with fluorescent lighting, your life is a waste. Pretty awesome that he got to make a career out of passion and burn out before growing old. Yeah, he looks like one of the wooks that tried to steal my stash at Bonnaroo, but BD was at least contributing to the world.

I just checked out his tumblr page. He was kind-of hot for a weirdo hippie. He probably popped one too many pills and took one too many hits of something one evening and thought nothing of it. Very tragic.

Sorry for the dude and the family...I LOATHE Burning Man with a passion. I went once, did a ton of drugs, and met people who base their whole life around this long weekend. I mean doing acid at 7 in the morning is kind of fun but some people seriously plan their costumes and "art" YEARS in advance.

He was a fire-dance artist. Hence, "poi-oneer" (a Poi ball is a ball on a chain that gets set on fire and swung around during fire dancing). I only really know this because a group of my friends have all made fire-dancing/breathing their latest hobby. It looks like a lot of fun.
As I would for the brother of anyone who died, I feel for JGL.
Too bad hitRECord.com is as frustrating as shit to use otherwise it was a cool idea.
I don't know who this guy is (the brother I mean; I know who JGL is)) but 36 is way too young to die. Sadness.

I am sure he just had one helluva time with his antics during his brief time on earth...and perhaps (to attempt a positive thought here) he even cheered someone else while on the planet. Still. I am very grateful that I am not this man's Mother...and that I didn't have to see his life squandered. You look at a photo like this..you learn he died at 36 and you just know it has something to do with self destruction. I could be wrong...but I doubt it. My thoughts are with his family.

I think it's sad but reading that he has to comment about this at Twithor.com makes me kind of angry. Doesn't anyone morn in silence anymore? Does everybody have to use the death of a beloved person to gain another few minutes in the spotlight? That's what's sad!
I don't get the impression that he's out to be a famewhore and use his brother's death for publicity. I thought his post was very heartfelt and sweet; not like Tila Tequila, who basically made Casey Johnson's death all about herself. People mourn in different ways.
