Michael Douglas Talks Cancer

Isn't that a headline that just squats over your cup of coffee and pisses in it? But it's not completely bad news. As some of you know, Michael Douglas was diagnosed with cancer of the froat three weeks ago and he had a conversation with both People Magazine and David Letterman about his current condition. Michael tells People that he has just started 8 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy to treat a tumor that is sitting at the base of his tongue and refuses to leave. Michael has 7 more weeks of treatment to go.

Michael told Letterman last night that the chemo will change his a voice a bit and he might have trouble swallowing solid foods. Michael's cancer is Stage 4, but it has not taken its evil act past his throat area. When Letterman asked what the chances are that it won't spread to the rest of his body, Michael answered that after doctors conducted a poll on Facebook they said he has an 80% chance of recovery. No, I don't know how doctors came up with 80%, but that's the number they gave to Michael. Other doctors say his chances are even better.

Michael's interview with Dave ended with a hug. Click here to see a piece of it.

Here's hoping to a full recovery! Michael should just make sure to keep his eyes closed when CZJ serenades him with a healing song, because that bitch looks crazy in the face when she sings. And this doesn't mean I have to pay money to see Wall Street 2, right? I'll sneak into it after buying a ticket for the much more respectable cinema masterpiece You Again.

So sorry about your Mom's cancer struggle and recent death. We are members of the same shitty-assed club as my mother also died of cancer two months ago on this past monday. Started in the breast, traveled to the brain. It really sucks and my empathy and understanding is with you. 'Tis a bumpy road, this greif, no? One day doing ok, the next day not so well. This I know firsthand. Hang in there!

he's in the fight of his life, but he still has time to do a People photoshoot, book his sorry self onto a number of lame talk shows and generally make the normal narcissistic publicity circuit he loved so much when he was well?

sorry, I don't like him any more with cancer than I did without it (which was not at all)

I've worked in the O.R. for 26 years. I've never really heard of anyone surviving stage 4 throat cancer. Even with a radical neck dissection, the prognosis is extremely grim. If he goes that route, he will be so physically disfigured that he will never reappear in public. I've assisted on enough radical necks, that I'd just ask my doctor for strong pain medication and comfort care. Yeah, I'm vain, but tube feeding and a trach just doesn't sound like living to me.

Even though MD looks like an uncle in my family who no one can stand because he's such a colossal egotistical jerk, I still love him and his movies. Plus he can bring the comedy gold when he wants to (only good thing in that shitty Ghosts of Girlfriends past and great in One Night at Mc Cool's). Like 10 MD movies are on my all time favorite movies list. Hope he gets better soon.

I wish you well Mr. Douglas.

P.S. - I might check out Wall Street 2:Electric Boogaloo.

My mother died two months ago after four years with throat cancer that eventually spread everywhere. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Even as things got worse, the doctors tried to keep her optimistic and she tried to be also until the end. Don't know if it helped or not. I'd like to think it did.

I don't know if I'd be willing to go through what she did, but it's impossible to say unless I'm in the same situation.

I really hope Douglas survives, but an 80% chance with Stage IV seems unlikely, though it's happened before. I guess I'm a bit pessimistic about cancer at the moment for obvious reasons. I wish him the best!

I don't wish death on anyone except a couple of dirty rotten celebutard and freckly skanks so I don't wish death on Michael Douglas. But he needs to be bitch-slapped hard for marrying that golddigger. It's amazing that even after a decade, when he already caught her flat-out lying about her age by several years, he still hasn't figured out that she married him for his money. She also married him because she realized immediately that no matter how old she looks at any given time, next to him she looks positively youthful!

Meh, if he dies, he dies! He had a better life than 95% of the people in this world. Besides, to me, for some reason he always came across as a giant asshole. He was one of those people that I hated the moment I laid my eyes on him, I cannot explain why.

American head and neck society says:

"Overall survival rates for any cancer of the oral cavity are about 70 percent five-year survival for stage I or II disease. Five-year survival drops to about 50 percent for stage III cancers and further drops to roughly 35 percent for stage IV cancers".

and may god be with MD; no one deserves cancer and he has children who need him. and kirk douglas; oh man i can only imagine him agonizing over the possibility of having to bury yet another one of his children.

my dad died of prostate cancer and it was mainly because he had too much "pride" to go to the doctor and get checked early. he knew cancer practically killed off most of his family and his wife kept telling him to go to the doctor but he still didn't. well, he's dead now and now my brother and i are worried (but especially my brother) that we may get it. prostate cancer, brain cancer, skin cancer. all in my family and because of them, half my family is dead.

that said, i wouldn't wish cancer on anyone and if you know you have it in your family you have to get checked and you have to do the best you can to take care of yourself. oh; and no smoking drugs, or alcohol either.

If they have to remove it, we probably won't ever see him publicly again. My FIL had that choice and chose the chemo over the surgery, because the surgery is often completely disfiguring.

Best of luck!

To be serious once again. I've been through 8 rounds of chemo fuckery since February. It tears your brain to pieces & you go cray-zee. I don't care what anybody's like as a person (I'm a screaming bitch); nobody deserves cancer. Good luck, Michael.

I love MD as an actor (ok, he sucked as a father/husdand for a good two decades)but he has small chirruns at home and I cannot wait to see Wall St. 2, although it won't hold a candle to 1 which will make me cry.

Bud Fox should have been right there with him and not Shia and his pixie. Besides, I read the pixie is his daughter - when WS 1 was out, he only had one kid - a nose picker called Rudy who was the real life kid of Ollie Stone.

Don;t tell me Sean Young was pregnant when he got sent to the big house....

(sorry, I've seen WS over 50 times. Sad, I know but I love it).

Stage 4 sucks.
Cancer staging is a tricky thing. It isn't all just about whether or not it has spread to the nodes or elsewhere. The actual type of cancer cells that make up the tumor are considered. Some cancer cells are more aggressive than others. Also, just because the nearest nodes are cancer negative now means very little. Cancer has been found to also spread in the bloodstream, not just the lymphatic system as was believed in the past. Family history is considered as well as overall health of the patient. I don't know specifics for throat cancer but whenever you hear stage 4, it is bad news. It likely has spread and will show itself relatively soon if it hasn't already.

Having chemo and radiation increases your chances of it NOT spreading and that is where the 80% may come in. Having both treatments may increase his odds of long term survival (more than 5 yrs) by up to 80% but his starting odds of long term remission are probably very, very low and 80% increase is a best case scenario. It is such an inexact science. If they really had solid numbers then they would know more about how it starts and how to treat or cure it effectively. They do not. After 40+ years of cancer research, you realize that medical science still doesn't know shit. Anyone who has gone through cancer themselves or is/was close to someone who has, knows this firsthand.

Many believe mindset and the power of positive thinking have a great impact on survival so Dr's tend to sugar coat a lot of it just to keep the patient in the fight.

I was just watching Kathie Lee Gifford on the Today show this morning. According to HER SOURCES, MD's cancer is from drinking and not from smoking. Okay, whatever.

Stage 4 cancer is a death sentence. I hope you prove them wrong Michael. Best of luck to you and your beautiful family.

Ovarian cancer is diagnosed in stage 1 or 2 almost 0 percent of the time. In fact most think it starts as stage 3.

I hope he has a full recovery as well...kind of ironic that he looks amazing in the thumbs...a lot of laser work, filler and surgery for sure...

...pretty good work though...smooth even complexion but not stretched ridiculously tight...for the most part age-appropriate...

...i've already resigned myself to doing whatever work I need to keep things looking good as I stare down at my late 40s...I've had some pretty good work done so far...hope I can get a similar quality of work as MD as I hit my 60s and beyond...

'...Sorry I haven't been in touch, it's just that lately I've grown to find you rather repugnant...no offense...'

Stage 4 indicates matastasis-probably at least his nodes are positive. What the hell is Dr. Oz's shocking news???
