I look at this whole situation a little differently.
As an African American, there are many woman in my family that don't shave their legs, my mother included. The difference, the other women in my family have disgusting amounts of hair on the legs--my mom? Not ONE. Never has. I guess I will allow this. I have more of a problem with the old AA woman that are fucking growing beards on their face as well as mustaches and choose to go out dressed to the nines and talk to me like I DON'T notice that they have a face like Zack Galifianakis. THAT I will not abide and that is RAMPANT with the old ones in the south. FOUL.
As for the bullshit phrase "open marriage". I look at it like this. Shaving for women is very much an "American thing." I have spent a lot of time in Europe, most of the women there do not shave their legs or arm pits.
My fellow PCOS sufferers,
My 16 year old daughter has PCOS too. I feel terribly guilty about it, but I did warn her that although the doctor said she would have trouble getting pregnant, that is not always the case so take precautions. I was told I wouldn't be able to get pregnant without the help of fertility drugs. I was on the pill because I wasn't getting my period and I had a seizure and they thought I had something wrong with my heart. They told me I should stop taking the pill because it may have been contributing to my issues. Of course, I got unexpectedly pregnant within a few months. I did end up losing the pregnancy though.
A few years later, when I was engaged and about to marry, we decided we should start trying a little early in case I did have trouble conceiving. We started trying in November, we got married in January and I got pregnant in May and had my now 16 year old in February.....and another daughter 20 months later.
As far as the hair goes, I'm practically a gorilla. The facial hair, and neck, is the worst. I used to wax and all sort of time consuming stuff, but I'll be 50 in a few years, have two teen daughters and am about to start a full time job. So, it's an electric razor for a minute or two and I'm done.
I employ my poor daughter to take care of my back in the summer. If I had more time, I would tell you a funny story about when my husband shaved my back for me once when his family was visiting us, but I gotta go.
I've probably grossed just about everyone out by now anyway.
My thoughts are with those with PCOS worrying about conceiving. If I'm any indication, you should worry less about it.

That's not what I said. You don't agree, fine, but most of the reactions are pretty aggressive, sometimes it feels like people are threatened by what's different. I'm not open-minded about EVERYTHING, but when someone is doing their thing and not hurting anyone, why go all crazy on their shit?
Like I said, I wouldn't be able to handle an open marriage relationship, but I understand why people make that choice, and respect them for that.
I have PCOS also. If you are young and concerned about fertility issues, I'd suggest talking to your doctor about taking Aldactone. It's a mild diuretic but has a secondary effect of shrinking the cysts. It takes a while to work but it will reduce hair growth. I started on it when I was 19 and had a little problem getting pregnant, but it did happen. It just took time and happened naturally.

I have PCOS too. It's such a bitch. I'm not terribly hairy bodywise, cos my mom is practically hairless. but I do spend considerable time and effort AND MONEY removing facial hair. I do threading and whaddya know, i've terrbly sensitive skin, so I tear everytime. My biggest fear is that I wont be able to conceive. and I love babies.

I don't shave as much in the winter. My armpits or legs aren't exposed near as much as they are in Spring or Summer, but I shave when I see a little bit of stubble.
But frankly, I don't bother with shaving my arms. If some guy is "repulsed" by fine, very light hairs on my arms, then he's just too much of a petty bitch for me to waste my time on.

I try not to pass judgement on women shaving because of my experience. It's a joke in my family and with the people I used to work with that they could tell when spring arrived because I would start shaving my legs. When we 'spring ahead' not only do I change the batteries in my smoke detectors, but I consider starting to shave my legs. I finally decided a few years ago that I wasn't going to subject myself to the crazy amount of time it took for me to keep my legs, and a few other areas, cleanly shaven.
My reason is that I have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and it causes very excessive hair. Everywhere. It takes alot of time and energy to keep the hair away from places there shouldn't be hair, nevermind my legs, which aren't exposed in the cold weather anyway. It also keeps me warm in the cold weather.
It certainly has nothing to do with cleanliness. People aren't 'pigs' because they don't shave their legs. I'm as clean as everyone else.
Alas, I wish my boyfriend liked hairy legs. Im indian so that would make things so much easier.

When I was participating in other forums, I was especially active on the Tiger Woods scandal, and commenters always would accuse those of us who disagreed with his actions as being judgmental, outdated, hyper-religious nutcases, putting words into our mouths ALL THE TIME that no-one has ever claimed about themselves. Gee, last time I checked, making unconfirmed assumptions about people based on their opinions and pulling random statistics out of your asses was considered just that, JUDGING.
The only actual difference is that they disagree with the other person's immediate opinion. I agree with you entirely. Wow I have to say I'm kind of surprised that 95% of the reactions here are conventional + rather judgmental...
I mean, using the words 'nasty' and 'gross' when it's just hair, overall there's nothing literally dirty about it, after all, we accept that from men and don't think it's nasty -though there seems to be a trend of men shaving their bodies lately...
No offense but it feels like the majority of the people overreact to whatever's different from society's conventions. I guess in regards to today's standards I don't stand a chance either...
