Brittany Murphy's Cause Of Death Revealed

Nearly 6 weeks after her death, the L.A. County Coroner has released Brittany Murphy's cause of death. TMZ says that the Coroner issued a statement that said Brittany died of community acquired pneumonia, iron deficiency anemia, and multiple drug intoxication. The Coroner also said that it was an accident.

The full autopsy report will be released in a couple of weeks.

Since Nurse Jackie is not here to tell me what any of this means, I went off to the Wikipedia in search of answers. According to them, this is what community acquired pneumonia is: "a disease in which individuals who have not recently been hospitalized develop an infection of the lungs (pneumonia). CAP is a common illness and can affect people of all ages. CAP often causes problems like difficulty in breathing, fever, chest pains, and a cough. CAP occurs because the areas of the lung which absorb oxygen (alveoli) from the atmosphere become filled with fluid and cannot work effectively."

TMZ added that a source involved in Brittany's autopsy said that her death could have been prevented if she went to the hospital in time. Instead of receiving the proper treatment at a hospital, Brittany self-medicated with over-the-counter meds, cough syrup and medication for cramps. Brittany already had the sicks in a major way, but the meds took her over the edge. So basically, iron pills and a hospital stay would've saved her life. Sads.

And I guess Simon Monjack will have to start singing a new song since his wrongful death lawsuit against Warner Bros. isn't going to go anywhere.

Seriously?
When the fuck did people lose common sense?
You have a cold, yes, let's drink an entire bottle of sleep-inducing cold medicine and take an anti-psychotic for good measure, THAT won't cause any harm.
The reason people are dropping dead of overdoses at an alarming rate is because stupidity is rising at an alarming rate.
For FUCK'S SAKE.

I've had pneumonia so I know what that feels like. As bad as I felt I still had to take care of my 3 yr old so I could definitely see how someone could still go about their daily routines and not realize how bad it is. She died in the morning too so it may just have hit her like a storm when she woke. Poor Brittany. I feel so bad for her, her husband and mom.

poor woman...I was never a fan but these things (in general) I find quite tragic. It seems that most young people's deaths come down to not really taking care of yourself, mentally or physically...whether you downplay or simply ignore quite serious symptomes, you think you are somehow indestructible because you're only *insert random young age* or you think you can still drive while you're drunk/drugged out out of your skull... meh, going a bit OT here...

All in all a very sad and unnecessary death

So, I guess king douchebag simon monjack's "The penquins killed my wifey" lawsuit is not going to move forward. Truthfully, his best play right now is to skip town. He's going to be charged with involuntary manslaughter for not only ignoring his wife's condition, but contributing to her death by providing her with prescription medication that wasn't even hers. I say give him 20 years in the electric chair...

Great way to describe it! Yes a deadly combination that was too overwhelming to handle.

Her death really pisses me off.

She was one of the few good eggs left in Hollyweird.

No reason for her to leave us this soon.

Ah well, same can be said about all people meeting their maker right now 'round this cold world.

Still, I wish those people, the good souls, did not leave us :(

So sad. Once fluid gets on the lungs, it's a very tricky situation. My mother who is a heavy smoker has been in the hospital for this many, many times. Once she had a folate anemia with it and almost died.

This is so sad, rest in peace Brittany...

That just is not the way someone that young should go in both her and Casey's case. People take care of yourselves you only have one body!

I work with diabetics and although it is difficult, by changing their diets, they reduce their meds significantly, some completely (depending on type 1 or 2)and also increase their health profiles. It is unbelievable how many people could prevent an untimely death just by learning and practicing a better lifestyle diabetic or not. Prevent don't treat!

Pneumonia is dangerous- you essentially drown from the inside out. Horrible. Add too much OTC medication which will suppress your already weakened system, and it's a recipe for disaster. Much like how Heath Ledger died- ignoring bad sysmptoms and taking pills that make you incapable of responding. She probably thought she had a terrible cold, but maybe wouldn't see a doctor because she took meds she wasn't supposed to?

Never had it before but I came down with a serious case of pneunomonia this winter. The shit held on for over 2 months and at times I felt like I would die. Coughed up blood several times and I now have a partially collasped lung that needs repair. I could definately see someone dying from that shit.

CandyPerfumeGirl's picture

Look guys, I really dont see the point of blaming her for supposedly having been reckless and not having gone ot the doctor or her husband for also supposedly having neglected her. I really think it was just a case of an interplay of really bad circumstances and unfortunate events resulting in her accidental death. You know how it is, people re busy, dont wanna bother going to the hospital for every thing they got, the family said she had flu like symptoms, so they prolly figured they can andle it. We have all been there. I am sure they didnt know it was pneumonia and decided "hey, let's just forgo the doctors and do it ourselves". It was just bad luck - which is what makes this the more sad.

Her death was unnecessary - it didnt need to happen but it did because of a series of unfortunate events. I dont think anyone is to blame. I dont think her husband wanted it to happen, I especially dont think her mother wanted her dead. it was just rotten luck. Poor Brittany and poor her mother.

Right before christmas /08 I got a bad "cold" and I HAD to work (single mom). Finally I was so wiped out that I too, home-medicated. Drank a bottle of nyquil, syroquil, you name it. Somehow crawled to a phone. Bf picked me up and took me straight to hospital. Woke up from a drug-induced coma a month later. (the Dr. induced the coma, not the cough medicines) I had been on life support and had to get a traechyotomy, 3 tubes were placed in my back draining my lungs. Suffered respiratory failure once and was revived. Pneumonia is scary shit. I too was 32 and perfectly healthy before. I am still recovering with most of my left lung intact, and the majority of my right lung necrosed. Very thankful to be alive though!

I knew when I heard her Mom and husband were making the rounds a week or so ago on shows trying to save face that it was something like this.

I think the most tragic part, other than her dying at all, is that her Mom was there supposedly taking care of her. I don't think anyone expected that asshole husband of hers to help her much, but her Mom?

People march their kids into hospitals for the sniffles, yet Brittany was in such bad shape that she died and no one so much as took her to the doctors?

It all points, imo, to them trying to hide something that was going on with her.

It's a shame.

Bree's picture

"Dr. Michael Baden, the former chief medical examiner in New York City, said the coroner's determination indicated drugs probably played a key role in Murphy's death.

"If she died of pneumonia, that cause of death is a natural cause," Baden said. He said the use of some prescription medications can lead to pneumonia, and that the coroner's office may have listed that as the primary cause to lessen the blow to Murphy's family.

"It sounds more like it's a drug-related than a natural pulmonary pneumonia," said Baden, who did not work on the Murphy case but has served as an expert witness in numerous high-profile deaths.

He said the quantities and types of drugs Murphy was taking is key to understanding how she died, as well as how recently she saw a doctor.

"One doesn't die of pneumonia, usually, that quickly," Baden said. He also downplayed the role anemia may have played in Murphy's death."

CAP is fatal in less than 1% of people who seek treatment outside of a hospital which essentially means antibiotics. I've had colds and I've had pneumonia and if you are AT ALL in tune with your body, you can tell the difference. A cold or flu goes away within a few days, while pneumonia lingers. You also have a distinctive gurgly sound in your lungs when you breathe instead of just having stuffed sinuses. THere is a HUGE difference. Pneumonia also completely wears you out. I can't imagine having this for a long enough period of time to let it kill you withotu thinking that I should go to a doctor.

FYI, The leading causes of death in anorexics are kidney, heart, and other organ failure, and diseases such as pneumonia which their bodies cannot fight off due to a weakened immune system.

Bossy, yes I know, the bills are steep when you visit the ER, but, it's just not fair, when there are "other" people who have no insurance, and cannot pay for an ER visit, but are still seen and THEIR bill becomes MY problem and I pay for it in taxes.

That would be me. I am a citizen. My job does not offer insurance and neither does my husband's. We both work for small companies.

I guess it would be "more fair" for you tax wise if I just didn't take my son to the ER when he is sick?

It's not like we walk out of the hospital bill-free, I have medical debt.

I wasn't surprised to hear about her husband's wrongful death suit against WB, but what is sad is that her mother was supporting what he was doing.
********

I'm not surprised at all -- her mother was on board with all of this fuckery as long as the bills were getting paid.

What kills me though is she was clearly underweight and anorexic and gee, could that be the cause of the anemia? Are the coroners paid off by Hollywood to not say she was underweight from anorexia because they don't want the public to demand they fatten up actresses?

Whatever's picture

Hope this keeps that fool she married quiet.

Major sads. A good friend of mine died 3 years ago - the same way. She was too proud to stop working and figured that she'd just get better. She went home for Xmas and her mom took one look at her and took her to the doctor. Doctor sent her to the hospital but it was too late. Pneumonia had spread to her second lung and 3 days later she died. 32 years old.
If only she'd just gone to the hospital to get checked out and what is the most confusing is that health care is free here in Canada.

It's funny how some people cherish being alive and well while others just don't give a shit.

I wouldn't call it an "accident" when people just don't take care of themselves, ending up dead due to their own carelessness. She had the one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be well and healthy, but decided not to eat well and abuse drugs. Shame.

i do this all the time. it takes me to be near death's door to get my ass to a doctor. it's just the way i was raised. i don't run to the doctor for every little thing. granted, pneumonia is not a little thing, but i always try to self-medicate first and battle it out, no matter how crappy i feel. never realized how risky that was...until now, and i will definitely take it more seriously next time. brittany, your death was not in vain.

Simon Fucking Monjak should file the Wrongful Death lawsuit...against himself!

ANy husband seeing how sick his wife was would have insisted she go to the doctor, to the hospital etc!

But No!!!!!

What was he doing? Stuffing his face with Fast Food and figuring out what movie Brittany would do next.

this is just my stupid opinion and i dont know anything....maybe Simon begged her to go to the doctors and she refused.

Just wished someone....him or her own mom could have made sure she got the right medical treatment.

A lot of people self-medicate when they're sick. I've stopped taking OTC drugs because I realized it didn't really help and I once got hives all over my body from probably a mixture of the sickness itself and all the OTC I was taking. Yet going to the doctor, in my experience, is rarely effective because they never want to be liable for actually making a judgement on anything. It's been a rare experience when a doc has actually given me what I really needed right away. So I can understand her reaction. Probably thought she just had the flu and needed to sleep it off. Poor thing, wish someone in her life was sane and taking care of her.

If this is actually her end, it's even more tragic. That just ignorance alone killed her.

The interesting thing is a lot of people will tag the "other" people as illegal immigrants. But the truth of it is a lot of those people are too afraid to go to the hospital because they could be discovered to be illegal and get deported. The people you do see come through the ER without insurance are usually low to low-middle income families. Once in a while they come in for something severe, but generally they will utilize the ER as insured people would use a primary doctor. So in the end you (an insured person) pay for their care, they pay for their care (though at a pretty good rate if they're only paying a portion of it in taxes), and even illegal immigrants pay for their care because a lot of them pay social security fees and gov taxes from their paycheck to the fed (though they will never be able to cash in on the SS because it's not actually their name/identity).

So, there were no prescription drugs in her system?

Why wouldn't she go to the doctor. I've had pneumonia before and HOT DAMN, you feel like SHIT and the chest pain and not being able to get a breath, uh, GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE DOCTOR!

________________________

See that's what I don't get, she wasn't alone! If she was alone having trouble breathing, chest pain, etc then I could see it. My Mom and Mr Passionate would tie me down in the car and take me to the doctor especially if I had diabetes and looked anemic. If anything, Conjack should have her troubled breathing, moaning, and coughing haunt him every time he thinks it's someone else's fault she died.

i went to the E.R. once when i had a seizure...i was out of it and couldn't say yes or no and it was my first (seizure) , and i stayed for 2 hours and only had an IV, saw the dr. once or twice, had a cat scan and the bill was 12,000 dollars. now (hey i know it's not going to last) i don't know how my ER co-pay is $5 dollars...and before anyone starts bitching and moaning i had to declare bankruptcy because of medical bills...

In KY, our co-pay is two chickens. Some doctors will accept some homemade preserves. For the E/R, they will accept either a small calf or a couple of jugs of moonshine.
