But do you really think that everyone who doesn't have health care is the just struggling to survive? Hell, when I was in my 20s, I didn't have health care either. Why? Because I just didn't want to spend the money on it. False sense of security because I was young. So not everyone who goes without does so because they can't afford it.
Again, I hear what you are saying but we've all seen abuses of other social programs like welfare and misplaced priorities. I hope that we can finally resolve the health care crisis and I'm not sure that can happen without government intervention but I am concerned about the speed at which this bill is being put forth.
I really do get tired of when we (collective we) talk politics that we can't seem to have a civilized discussion. I don't think far left liberals are idiots, nor do I think far right conservatives are idiots. There are good points to each ideology. I just think both are too extreme for me.

Even the poor in India have cell phones now. Second, I don't see these people w/o insurance necassarily living in the lap of luxury. Third, cell phones, manicure, etc. cost a helluva lot less than a visit to the hospital these days. If you break your arm and go get medical care in a hospital, it will easily cost you around $30,000. Yeah, most can afford a cell phone and a manicure, but not that. I love how people such as yourself find ANY reason to blame the ones who are going sick. You'll do ANYTHING to keep from having one cent given to those w/o health care even if it costs you nothing. Nevermind that the healthcare plan is supposed to save us money in the long-term. You can't STAND the idea of not pinching that penny when someone's life depends on it. People have to be frickin' lepers to meet your criteria of deserving help? This healthcare is not a handout. Everything in medecine and health is now priced astronomically to the point where even the middle class cannot afford it. How do you know how much each person is saving? The point is that nobody can cover their costs alone. Period. So, your blame-it-on-them thinking fails logic. Who the hell can pay for their healthcare in this country out of pocket? Insurance companies have done a great job of making sure the costs are not easily met. So, manicures and pedicures are not luxuries, but rather health care is. Health care nowadays is the biggest luxury. No matter how much one saves, most people will not be able to cover the hospital bill on their own.

I read an article in the Washington Post magazine once about this dogwalker in DC who said he couldn't afford health care and yet the article noted the other luxurious things he could afford -- eating out at expensive restaurants every night, plush apartment in DC, expensive clothing and shoes. Now, had he scaled back his lifestyle, he might be able to afford insurance.
There's a huge difference to me in helping the downtrodded hard workers and the people that chose to do everything else but get themselves insurance.

I think you are overestimating Americans to be really hardworking, scrimp and pinch, industrious individuals. We used to be a couple of generations back, but not anymore. There is a segment of the population that works hard and pays the taxes but there's a HUGE chunk that doesn't do that. They claim they're unable to afford health care, but they have more than enough money for luxuries. They're the ones with the latest electronics, the biggest plasma TVs, the most expensive cell phone plans, the biggest gas guzzling cars, the weekly manicures, cable TV (yes, that's a luxury), the never-ending nights out on the town, the credit card debt on goods they never should have bought, etc. But hell, ask them to contribute towards their health care, and all of a sudden, they're poor. The sheer number of people who abuse the system is sickening.
I would have no problem with universal health care if every working individual was forced to contribute a percentage towards their health care before they took their paychecks home. And really, there needs to be some kind of national education program about healthy lifestyle habits. When people have no problem eating shit all the time, drinking til liquor is coming out of their asses, doing drugs recreationally, sleeping indiscriminately with any skank/whore/male whore that comes their way, I'm sure there are more careful members of society who probably resent having to bail out these people with their taxes.

I can't understand why Americans are freaking out about his health care plan. You live in the richest country in the world (for the time being) and god forbid if you spread it around and have a universal health care system. Ours in Canada certainly has its faults but you won’t lose your home and everything you've worked for if you get sick or hurt. People are part of the infrastructure. If you have a healthy infrastructure you'll have a healthier economy. Imagine if what you could do if the majority of your population was healthy and capable of working a honest 40 hour week. The country would prosper tremendously. People call Obama a commie because of his plan. As someone mentioned you have no idea of what communism really is. So shut the fuck up and help your fellow man out a bit and you'll ALL do better by it.

Considering America will *never* become a socialist nation -- as many believe it will -- some of you need to understand neoliberalism vs. reformism. Neoliberalism is a laissez-faire approach to the economy -- free market capitalism, the Invisible Hand, almost like a religious dogma for Capitalists. Then you have the reformists who consider Capitalism to be neither good nor bad, but can use improvement. These improvements call for the reformation of government policies and addresses social inequality. It's one thing to scream and shout that the gov't should not be involved in health care and banks, but good businessmen are just like the theory of Communism in way -- good on paper, seldom or nonexistent. We still need some form of regulation that gives people an outlet to express what they think should be done about about the economy. However, some neolibs feel that a technocracy (placing the most intellectual and qualified individuals in office) would help to mobilize our progress in a speedy and efficient way. This would cripple the idea of a democracy, putting power in the hands of a few (oligarchy). There is NOTHING wrong with implementing socialist aspects into Capitalism if it will help to reduce our current economic deficit and reduce the gap between the rich and poor. So what are our options? Raise taxes, cut spending. We could use the Tobin tax system which taxes foreign investments and keeps the power of the US dollar strong. Cutting social programs would be detrimental -- especially in education and health care (and in my opinion an issue in nat'l security but that's a different argument). If we cut anything, we need to cut military spending first and foremost...okay I'm going to shutup now.
