Eric Steward, the Australian pepaw who went out to pick up the morning paper at the local store, but ended up taking a wrong turn which led him 400 miles the wrong way.
81-year-old Eric was visiting friends with his wife when he took off at 7:30 Monday morning to get the newspaper. Pepaw Eric took a wrong turn onto the highway and drove nearly 400 miles for a total of 9 hours before he decided that he should probably ask for some help. Eric finally asked a police officer for some directions back home. By this time, Eric's wife had already called the police and reported his old ass missing! The police officer simply showed Eric the right way and he was reunited with his wife 9 hours later.
Eric told the Australian media, "I just went out on the road to have a drive, a nice peaceful quiet drive. I didn't know where I was going but I knew it was somewhere, and with a bit of luck I would eventually find my wife again. When you get to 80 and beyond it doesn't matter much. He's out there waiting for us and you just got to wait your turn." And when a reporter said he should get a GPS, Eric snapped back, "Why would you want one of those? You can't get lost. There is no fun in that."
400 miles in 9 hours?! Was Eric driving a shopping cart with rusty wheels? Well, at least he wasn't speeding.
And I know how Pepaw Eric feels since my brain is constantly going 400 miles in the wrong direction.

Pepaw Eric took a "wrong turn", my ass. He was sick as hell of the friends they were visiting with, and probably of his wife too that particular day. If she hadn't called the cops he would've driven straight across to Perth, gotten into a boat and would be headed to Madagascar as we speak.

I'd cosign that. About 10 years ago, the maintenance guys where I worked sent the parts-runner (who was in her 20's) to get a part at a store that was about 20 minutes away. They gave her directions, but she got on the interstate GOING THE WRONG WAY and didn't stop until 2 hours later when she was 100 miles away.

This actually makes me sad. We discovered my grandmother had Alzheimer's when she went out for a doctor's appointment, and ended up going missing for 36 hours.
She made one wrong turn and got completely confused and tried to find her way back home. She gassed up the car several times, but it never occurred to her to call home. She ended up driving all around NJ, top to bottom. She eventually crashed her car into a ditch near Atlantic City, and spent the night in her car. The next morning she went to the first house she saw, and they called us.
Thank god she didn't hurt anybody. We had to take her keys away and take the spark plugs out of her car in case she found the keys.

I have had some car accidents here in FL and I am telling you what, every single one of them has been an elderly person driving a Grand Marquis car and it was their fault, all of them! I'm literally frightened when I see those cars now.

My grandfather (aged 95) did the same thing last year in Austin Texas and ended up in Oklahoma and he finally made a U-turn and drove back to Austin and walked in the Assisted-living facility he stays at 24 hours later like he was returning from McDonalds. He had his 15 minutes of fame with the Texas State Troopers as the "runaway grandpa" and we took his keys and sold his car. The Texas DMV that year had renewed his license for 5 more years.
I wonder how far he would've gotten on a Segway.

This old bat on pills rammed into my car, forcing it to hit a streetlight pole, totalling my car (just finished paying it off too)...I hit my head on the steering wheel and ended up at the hospital.
