WAY BACK in the 90s I did a newsletter, xeroxing copies of pages & I found out the inspiration for Riot was Bruce Willis; I talked to the doll designer & printed it out. Purple envelopes, fan fic, etc. Precious Jems was the name, it sounded better than 'the Jem Appriciation Society'.
Too bad Mattel got their way & shut down the Bratz Dolls, Barbie is not the first fashion doll; there were dolls brought to the French Court wearing clothes the designer HOPED the royals would buy. I'm sure there must be at least 1 of those dolls in a museum somewhere. I hope the Bratz guy eventually wins.

Barbie and the Rockers. That's true. Mattel had gotten wind that Hasbro was gonna come out with the Jem Doll line, and beat them to the punch at ToyFair with Barbie and the Rockers.
Hasbro was unable to sustain Jem as a profitable doll line because of her size. They said kids liked to mix Barbie dresses with other 11.5" dolls and Jem and her posse were just too big.

I like that on the Wikipedia page for Jem it says, while talking about arch-rivals The Misfits, "This group should not be confused with the real-life band The Misfits, led by Glenn Danzig."
It's a good thing they said that, because I CONSTANTLY made that mistake.
I loved Jem as a kid... they were part of my daily dose of cartoons, where I lived, the local tv station would have Jem, followed by G.I Joe, and Transformers. I was on The Misfits side, I loved Pizzaz, Roxy and Stormer, and Clash(?).
I kept waiting for a crossover between those three shows, as they were produced by the same animation studio. I would dream about Pizzaz joining forces with Cobra Commander and Megatron to form the ultimate evil alliance.

i remember having one of those viewmasters (they looked like cheap ass binoculars and you put those cards into them) and i had a whole set of jem stories/adventures that i would watch religiously while sitting in my room with the strawberry shortcake wallpaper...
