Who Will Save Your Soul? Mike Seaver Will!
Remember Kirk Cameron's video rant from earlier this week about evolution, Darwin, Hitler (who is having the best week ever) and creationism? Understandably, Kirk got shit for it, but that isn't stopping him from continuing to spread his message! Kirk told People that he's on a mission to save the souls of our college freshmen. Kirk will visit colleges and universities to hand out a new 50-page introduction for Darwin's The Origin of Species.
Kirk said, "Atheism has been on the rise for years now, and the Bible of the atheists is The Origin of Species. We have a situation in our country where young people are entering college with a belief in God and exiting with that faith being stripped and shredded. What we want to do is have student make an informed, educated decision before they chuck their faith. I am proud to bring this to people's attention. You see things in the world that are truly distressing and you think, 'What can I do?' Well this is something I can do."
And what would Kirk say if his children believed in evolution? Kirk responded, "I accepted a lot of things that are not true before I was able to sit down and listen to more then one side and think things through the issues. I would sit them down and tell them that I was happy that they were thinking about this stuff, now let's look at all of the information and see if we don't come to a better conclusion. If after that, they still come to the same conclusion, so be it."
To be fair to some college students, it's hard to be a drunken whore with no morals when you have to get up early on a Sunday to go to church. I don't think anyone would appreciate them sitting in a pew with blood-shot eyes and crusty jizz on the corners of their mouths. It's best for everyone if they stay home and attend the Church of Father Dowling.
And just so we're clear, I know a ton of atheists who don't consider The Origin of Species as their bible. Their bible is and will always be the cocktail menu at T.G.I. Friday's.

Maybe if this fool actually opened a book (not written by some religious nut) his whole first quote wouldn't be absurd. There is a reason educated people stray away from religion, that's because they're smart enough to see how ludicrious it is. Don't get me wrong, fine if you need to believe in something in order to get through life but don't push it onto people who are smart enough to see through it.
And yes I am aware that there are educated individuals who do believe in religion. It is a curious thing and if I weren't so lazy I might look up their views on it to understand why after everything they know they still need to believe in a mythical figure who will redeem their souls.

Parents now are way too lazy to wake up on a sunday morning to gather the tribe and head off to church. Thus the tradition is broken.

Yeah.
Religious universities brainwash, too, which is just as bad.
They have ALL conservative professors.
There needs to be a mix.
Not all conservatives are evangelical, wide-stance assholes, and not all liberals are baby-killing treehuggers.
You have been brainwashed.
You saw the worst of conservatism in grade school (as did I, Catholic school all the way, warts and all), and the worst of liberalism in college.
That is my point.
The fact that we devote so much time to this absurd debate only demonstrates how powerful our fear of the unknown really is. Religion is primitive and childish. Kirk Cameron is retarded. I feel sorry for his kids. End of story.
*************************************************
Why should I be humble, if I know that I am THE BEST IN THE WORLD?
College isn't what makes people turn away from religion. The bigotry, division, and finger-pointing is what does it for a lot of people, myself included. And I went to a Catholic school for years. From physical abuse at the hands of nuns to the promotion of division over unity, I had enough of it. If people want to talk about colleges promoting 'liberal brainwashing', religious universities brainwash as well, only I'd rather be brainwashed by the belief that all people deserve equal rights, including women in high positions in the church and gay rights to marriage. I don't know how people can promote hate and claim it's in the name of God, but it certainly isn't. Getting an education is a beautiful thing and people can chose what type of university they want to go to. If they were that concerned with faith in education, they would go to a school that prioritizes that, and that said there is a division of CHURCH AND STATE and it's for a reason. If people want to be religious that's their right, I don't know why atheists have to be demonized here. I really resent the notion that athiests are bad people or amoral, I volunteer for charities and causes and give a lot of myself, have never been in jail, and have never done anything that bad. I don't even drink, smoke, do drugs, etc. Some people don't need the threat of eternal hellfire to do the right thing. Whatever works for you, I'm all for it. But don't bag on people going to college or on atheists rights to co-exist on this planet, it's ours too. We're all humans here, let's stop the superior acts.
Well, he's obviously a serious holy roller, and has been for years...
However, he has a point about college, in colleges there are only wildly liberal professors, so let the brainwashing begin!
It would be good if there were a mix of conservative and liberal professors, but the conservative professors would never be hired because if they applied for those jobs they'd be killed.
Dear Kirk: I met you once when my god aunt lived next to you..sherman oaks I think..(prob I was like 11)..you seemed ok. but knowing what my god aunt told me, you got all into this because of your wife. when I met her with you, she didnt give me positive vibes. I am not religious but I believe in something. what? not sure..but i know is positive. Christians (from Christ) believe in the positive, love and forgiving. You are part evangelist meaning..you want to convert people into religion. STOP! Not right, respect other people's believes and maybe one day you will be forgiven for not thinking or believing in what you want to. take that!!
Sincerely,
C

Questioning one's faith should be encouraged because if a person is really feeling it, they'll be stronger for it. -------------------------------------------------
I couldn't agree with you more. If one is spiritual or religious, with knowledge comes a better understanding of one's beliefs. They don't have to be static. With wisdom comes growth.
Well, Zig, I may give Buddism a pass where peace is concerned, but it really irks me that a human being is called His Holiness and rules over other people. In the name of a higher power. No matter how gentle and benign he appears.

"What we want to do is have student make an informed, educated decision before they chuck their faith. "
I think that is precisely what's happening as we young people get out in to the world or go to college and are exposed to people that aren't just like us. Some folks can't handle it and find people that don't push them out of their comfort zones (groups like Campus Crusade for Christ or even the greeks, in a way).
Other people take the opportunity to explore differences with others and grow. This is what people like Kirk Cameron have a problem with: folks outgrow their interpretation of religion and it bothers them because convincing enough people to believe the way they do means they're right on some level.
Questioning one's faith should be encouraged because if a person is really feeling it, they'll be stronger for it. The method through which he proselytizes probably won't make a lot of those people come back to the fold.

I'm a lifelong athiest (literally, my parents raised me that way) and The Origin of Species is most certainly NOT my Bible (although I've read it). What an asshole. He needs to go back to obscurity now.
Ugh. Religiosity makes me stabby, in all its forms. I feel it's harmful, even at its most passive. When it gets assertive and nuts, it makes me that much more stabby.
Kirk should spend less time caring about whether or not kids can open a bible in school or that the ten commandments are posted in public places (and making a video about it) and more time on feeding the hungry or building houses for the poor or using his cash to provide supplies for the indigent instead of this self-indulgent piece of tripe like putting a new beginning to a book.

i guess they should stop force-feeding you algebra and literature and history, too? Who are you, some expert already? You know what is fact without it ever being presented to you? I hate to break it to ya, but the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection is the CENTRAL DOGMA of biology! Much like the Pythagorean Theorem is one of the CENTRAL THEOREMS of geometry.

Oh shut up, douche. You can believe in God AND evolution.
I'm an atheist and I have never read that Darwin book. Too many big words.
Amen brother MK, amen. And the drink menu at Friday's is strangely yummy!
You know what really pisses me off about this shit? One, that this little twerp thinks that he's some kind of authority on the bible and religion and acts like he's been chosen as "god's" mouthpiece. And he's sitting there talking about oh, the lack of faith is a travesty! No! A travesty is a 12 year old girl being sold into sexual slavery, never to be heard from again! In fact, most atheists I know (self included) are more ethical and honest than any religious person I have EVER met. because we don't answer to some imaginary figure in the sky we answer to ourselves and hold ourselves accountable for our actions. And doing "hood rat stuff" makes looking in the mirror a little more difficult. Sanctimonious asshole!

RE: Raul Duke
That wasn't just the room spinning - you were falling a little over 1000mph around the Earth's axis, and 65,000mph around the Sun. Up and down are pretty subjective when you're talking about something huge and round, like a planet's gravitational field.
But the important thing is, since scientists can't quite explain gravity, this must by default be proof that there is a God, and therefore talking snakes and magical apples, so it logically follows that gays are bad and Kirk Cameron and Carrie Prejean will go to heaven while Gandhi rots in hell. FACT.

What is the "choice"? Evolution is based on fact, creationism is based on faith. Science is about fact.
BTW, every hear about the seperation between church and state? Religion does not belong in the classrooms unless it is being studied from a historical or survey prospective.
And Americans wonder why the USA is dead last in the sciences. (And I say this as an American.) True story: I dated an Italian evolutionary anthropologist, and he thought it was fucked up that there were even debates about teaching creationism in the schools. In Italy they would laugh their asses off if this even came up. Same with the rest of the EU and most of Asia.
BTW, even Pope John Paul II believed in evolution!
Apparently Kirk doesn't believe in grammar either. It's THAN.. not then..

On the other end of the spectrum, I had a douchetard of a prof in college who confused evolution with eugenics and sociobiology and used 'it' to justify racism, rape, and shagging every blonde, big-boobed floozy that walked into his classroom.
But yeah, Kirk is being a moron here. If he were attacking the sh!tastic and ridiculously biased 'The Blind Watchmaker', I could sort of see his point, but I doubt this dumb-@$$ even knows that books other than the Bible and Origin of Species exist.
