So when I read Christopher Ciccone's cunty comments about the way his sister looked at the VMAs, I didn't really think he was being mean-spirited. Since Vadge crushes her cell phone with her bare hands whenever he calls, he had no choice but to give his critique to E! News. Christopher is speaking from the bottom of his famewhoring heart.

First of all, by what basis do you proclaim that all artists have to be original? I can't think of one artist that is truly original. I have a PhD in art history and I cannot think of one artist that was truly, and i mean 100 percent original. An artist is able to take what they know and what they admire and express it anew. What they believe, which is by no means "original" and is learned from (or a reaction to) a multitude of different sources (parents, friends, other artists, lovers, etc.), is put together in the way they see fit and the product is then judged both aesthetically and in regards to its societal value--it's ability to act as a conduit between artist and viewer or cultural "moment" and a later viewer, per se.
Thus, in regards to her status as an artist, you are absolutely incorrect. She has been responsible for the mainstream dispersal of many new and fresh ideas to the public at large. What other pop star was brazen enough to do a Sex book? What other pop star, again, a MAINSTREAM star, was brave enough to question the church so vehemently and repeatedly? What pop star was so dedicated to blurring gender lines so radically, often substituting male and female roles on stage and in videos? Who else was responsible for repeatedly relegating the male to the position of "object" in the pop world?? Who else worked with whomever she liked, whether the forefathers of drag/vogue, european techno underground stars, jewish mystics? Who else amalgamated all these interesting and attractive (at least to her) into one pop music career?
Would you consider someone who just sits at a guitar, playing the same chords as every other 15 year old stoner can play, and reciting a recalculation of the same cliched love sonnets an artist? Are you a John Mayer Fan? or do you like indie rock, with its conformist anti-conformism? Who is truly original? No one who has worked to expose and popularize not only their interests (likes/dislikes) but also their message, that of freedom and individuality, more in the public eye. No one.
You might hate her because you think she's a whore. You might think she was an opportunist. You might even think she's ugly, but you have to admit that NO ONE else has even come close to her in furthering their own creative and artistic interests, however original or unoriginal.
And refresh my memory, but was Madonna particularly pandering to a straight male audience when sexualizing her image? Was she posing with hair extensions, hooker heels, bikinis and monster trucks? How did her sexualized image hurt the feminist movement? Please think before you speak. Her sexualized image was in fact an effort to expose the sort of image that you criticize for the bullshit that it is. She did not suck on an elderly man's toe or wear spikey bras with the hope that, due to her "sexiness," people would buy her product. If anything, for most of her career at least, Madonna did what she liked and what interested her, however sexual. Perhaps she knew what would provoke and garner interest from the public. In fact, half of her re-inventions have been anything but "sexy." Since when are dreadlocks and henna tattoos sexy? Since what is a pixie-cut, gold teeth and a cigar submissive and sexy? When has she ever played the sexual OBJECT in any of her reinventions?
Feminism is about owning your sexuality and not allowing objectification of your being. Madonna has never and will never be put in the corner and is the first, mainstream pop star to promote such an image.
So instead of questioning her contributions without thinking, next time, just admit that you are not a fan and do not understand or appreciate what she has done. Don't deny that she has done something pretty awesome, because she definitely has.
