But I do think some of his self hatred was because he felt ashamed of being black. It's kind of complicated to explain. He may have used 'African' imagery, but you have to understand that being 'African' and being 'African American' or 'black' are two totally different things. Africans and African Americans are two totally separate and distinct culture groups. We may share some DNA and genetic material, but culturally there is a world of difference.

But here's the thing, I realize Joe Jackson probably beat the crap out of MJ and the other Js, but he was no different than other men of his generation. A lot of black kids got their asses whooped by their mama, daddy, Big Daddy, or Big Mama, and they turned out fine. I think MJ used that as an excuse. Yes, it's true that abuse is damaging, and can screw up your self esteem, but it's not an excuse to go play God and screw up what he gave you. It's not an excuse to not grow up and pretend to be Peter Pan and sleep in beds with little boys. At some point, MJ needed to take ownership of his own life, and stop blaming his dad for the messed up direction it took. Because like it or not, if Joe Jackson hadn't been hard on him and his brothers, they never would've made it out of Gary.

And I'm not taking up for Joe 'cause I think he's crazy as the day is long, I just get tired of adults blaming their parents for their f*** ups in life.

I am African American, and I agree with you wholeheartedly on this point. I have to be honest and say one of the reasons that I did not vote for Obama was because of Michelle. Not that I don't like Michelle, because I do, but I felt that their marriage was a sham. I felt he married her as a political move so that he would appeal to black voters in Chicago. I just found it so hard to believe that this half white man who was raised by white people fell in love with an African American woman. Not to say it COULDN'T happen, but I just was skeptical. I know it sounds crazy, and I got a lot of flack from other African Americans (and I probably will get some here, too. I don't care), but something just wasn't right.

I have changed my opinion now that I see them. Maybe initially he did marry her as a way to advance his career, but they seem like they really love each other. I'm just a skeptic when it comes to "love" though.

Also, I don't consider Obama "black" in the way that I am black. His father was Nigerian, his mother was a white lady from Kansas. I don't think he has had to endure a lot of the struggles that "African Americans" have had to endure. By that I mean, he did not have any direct ancestry that was enslaved. He didn't have parents or grandparents who lived through segregation. And truth be told, he is more "African" than I am. Anyway, this is a tangent, and more appropriate for another venue.

I'm not taking up for Rupert, I couldn't give a fuck what he thinks honestly but he was being interviewed and they asked him questions they wanted to know. He's not a pussy and he doesn't care what we think of him or his answers so he answered. It's that simple. Now let's go back to bashing him for not agreeing with everything he said.

I actually quite enjoyed his book whilst I was on Holiday not having to engage any brain cells at all but might I throw in the bit of corrective history. The British did not "invent" slavery actually....Slavery was going on In Africa before any Europeans arrived. It happened throughout the Ottoman Empire and between many differnet tribes and factions who constantly battled and dominated each other in turn as did Various South East Asians. Unfortuantely the white man took it to a whole new level of organised cruelty and shit......
