I think the phenomenon of new Hollywood skanks like Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, etc., is due to plunging standards of conduct. Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and their ilk had problems with drugs, promiscuity, multiple marriages, and so on, but they behaved themselves in public for the most part. There is something to be said for maintaining a certain level of decorum. It preserves your image, for one thing. Very few people today think of Marilyn or Liz as drugged-out sluts.
